When we get sick…

by Christine - From Dates to Diapers on January 19, 2009

We ALL get sick. And SICK is what we get.

Last week it was the stomach flu, this week a nasty head cold.

sick-giraffe1Zach woke up the other night coughing and looking as if he would fall apart. last night my little Ben sounded as if he couldn’t breath, as he coughed and cried. I hate seeing my babies sick – fevers, runny noses, and coughs translate into sleepless nights, tepid baths, and miserable kiddos.

It seems that either everyone gets the bug all at once or the virus is spread out over the course of several days, or weeks even. Either way you slice it, having a bug run it’s course through any family is never fun, but when there are 8 of us affected.. ugh. Not to mention the chaos that ensues when mommy gets sick… we won’t even go there!

I know there are so many things we can do to help ward off the nasties during these winter months, but what do you do when the flu’s already hit your family hard?

Here’s how we’re trying to cope this week…

For the coughs that could keep the babies up all night, we rub them down with Vicks VapoRub. But, instead of putting this topical ointment on their chest or back, we cover the bottoms of their feet. I can not seem to find an explanation for this miracle cure, but as long as it’s just a cold that is ailing your little tyke (or you!), this will work!

We have the new Vicks Germ Free Humidifier going in the boys’ room. This powerful little beast kills 99.999% of bacteria, mold and spores in the water vapor that enters the air, offering more protection for my kiddos. Running a humidifier to help soothe cough symptoms and clear stuffed up noses is especially important for children whose smaller nostrils get stuffed up more easily. Perfect for my room full of little nostrils!

My ear thermometer has become my best friend this week, as I monitor my kiddos temperatures. In fact, the Braun ThermoScan ExacTemp Ear Thermometer is the fastest and most accurate way to take an ear temperature measurement – even in the middle of the night with a sick, fidgety kiddo.

Lots of love, cuddles, and hugs are being doled out this week, as well. It’s so hard when everyone’s sick…

How do you cope with sick kiddos?

It’s the worst when Kaila is sick. I’d die without a humidifier when she’s sick. That’s how we cope, that a Vick. LOL Even my Grandfather always said that Vicks works wonders.

The feet trick with Vicks is my favorite!

We’ve all been sick this last week, too. I guess it’s pretty wide spread, because there was NO Vicks left on the store shelf when I went to get some…

Oh my gosh, I have a horrible head cold right now with coughing that is driving me nuts. I am totally going to try your vapor rub on the feet. I’ll let you know what happens. Thanks for the idea.

Boo is dealing with strep throat now, so we do lots of cool liquids. Popsicles and applesauce seem to be a hit, but not much else.

Hope you are all feeling better!
