The Sounds of Summer

Imagine two gleeful and pyromaniac eight-year old boys watching your every move as you rotate the T-bone steaks sizzling on the wood fire. Earlier, they wanted free reign of the matches to light the brickets (which of course you said no way) and now they shadow you as you reach for the seasonings and the BBQ sauce. They’re ready to pounce on the tongs as soon as you set them down.

“Daddy, can I flip the next one?”

“No, it’s my turn. He did it last time. You said I could do it!”

“Both of you be quiet and get me a plate. These sweet babies are about done.”

Ah, the sounds of summer – the joyful noise around the backyard BBQ. We always have fun, but sometimes in order to keep the house from burning down, I have to regulate. And teach the boys about the uses – and dangers – of fire.

Christine caught the twins stoking a fire on the side of the house when they were six years old. But at least they had the good sense to use rocks to create a fire pit, even if some of the flammable toys didn’t make it. If they hadn’t, our entire backyard of dry, four-foot high weeds would have likely gone up in flames.

These days, we have nice green grass, lots of flowers, queen palms and a brick patio to support the BBQ. And it’s complemented with some very comfortable furniture we got from Better Homes and Gardens, courtesy of WalMart.

So, on Sunday afternoons sitting outside enjoying the sunshine and relaxing under the giant umbrella, or on cool summer evenings, we head outside to enjoy beef. It’s what’s for dinner.
