Last week I had a chance to spend some time in Borders, browsing their new Toys and Games department. Yes, I went alone! And, boy did I have fun. I picked up some great items for the kids and an Entertainment Book (thanks, Borders!) and saved a ton.

my selection

There really are some great deals…. I received the Bionicle pictured here for FREE, because I purchased $25 worth of items from the game section. I received a $5 gift card for purchasing the Entertainment Book. The Melissa & Doug toys were buy one, get one at 50% off. AND the games were buy two, get one free! These deals were available last week, but I’m sure there are some great ones this week, as well!

I remember playing board and cards games in general a lot growing up. I was really drawn to UNO..it taught me major patience and how to take turns.

I remember playing Chinese Checkers and games like Clue. They are fun and a bit more exciting for parents than Chutes and Ladders!

I use to have the American Dolls when I was younger. I think they are still a great toy for kids today because they also teach you a part of history!

Lindsay November 30, 2009 at 1:51 pm

I had a robot that helped me learn how to spell, I took him everywhere! I know an updated version would be great for my son.

Gena November 30, 2009 at 1:58 pm

I would have to say Monopoly Jr. It is great for vocabulary, especially for kids today that text and IM and don’t use real words.

The Rainbow Color Cones are so sweet! What a cute way for kids to learn their colors. Growing up, we spent the majority of our time outdoors riding our bikes and making up our own silly games with shadows and whatnot. :)

I remember the fun our family playing Scrabble. It is a great way to learn vocabulary and spelling. Thanks for this offer.

I remember playing with handmade and store bought puppets growing up. It really sparks the imagination and gets kids to be creative, rather than sitting in front of the tv playing video games. We’d spend hours making up our own crazy storylines!

R Hicks November 30, 2009 at 6:48 pm

As a kid, I remember playing candyland a lot. IT is one of those timeless board games that kids today would love playing too.

I would love to buy an American Girl mini doll and book for my 9 year old daughter. I also love the Melissa and Doug games! Great giveaway!

sal williams November 30, 2009 at 8:42 pm

We played card games like old maid…the little kid’s version of poker…reading “tells” to stay away from the old lady card, we also played pick up sticks which was an excellent exercise in eye-hand motor control. And we had kaleidescopes which showed us how beautiful symmetry could be. In loved my kaleidescopes and still have them. Good times! Thanks for the walk down memory lane and for a great giveaway. Happy holidays to you and yours.

I don’t remember having any of the toys from their site when I was a kid (oh, so many many years ago), but I see in your picture of the store that they have lego sets. I remember every year getting a new lego set from my aunt for Christmas. Now, she gets them for my little boys, and I think they are the most fabulous presents. They really awake the engineer in my boys, and I’m always so impressed that they are able to construct all the vehicles and buildings. I remember only being able to make towers and pyramids with my legos!! Would be great to win the gift card. Thanks for the giveaway.

Sue November 30, 2009 at 9:33 pm

The chemistry kit! I remember getting one for Christmas. It’s a great gift because it teaches kids science!

Musings from Me November 30, 2009 at 9:36 pm

My fave toy from childhood was the Ready Ranger backpack. It was a plastic backpack with a periscop, a clip board, and walkie talkies. I would wear along with a paior of bouncy moon shoes.

Operation, pick up sticks, uno, the ungame. All kinds of great games to teach gamesmanship.

Jay F. November 30, 2009 at 10:59 pm

Monopoly. We used to have tournaments, and extend the rules to have more fun. It was a way to get together with my cousins and to learn how to negotiate, which I think my kids could also learn.
