Shine On Now {American Girls}

by Christine - From Dates to Diapers on July 13, 2010

As a mom, I hope to instill and foster strong values and a spirit of goodwill in my kids. Values that urge them to give to others. Give of their time, talents, and energy. This, my friends, is one of the reasons I have agreed to partner with American Girls to help promote their Shine On Now program.

Shine On Now - American Girl

What is the Shine On Now program?

Well, beginning today, girls across the country can help give $1 million in clothes, books, dolls, and money to four charitable organizations: Kids in Distressed Situations, Save the Children, National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions, and National Wildlife Federation.

How can our daughters, grand-daughters, nieces, and friends get involved?

Each day, through July 31st, girls have the opportunity to donate stars, free of charge, through the Shine On Now website. American Girl will donate $1 per star on their behalf and each girl be able to donate up to 100 stars each day! In addition to helping a great cause, each girl will automatically be entered to win an American Girl doll of her own!

What’s more, girls can download a free Ambassador tool kit filled with ideas for little (and large) ways to make a difference!

Shine On Now

Enter to win an American Girls doll right here at From Dates to Diapers!

Now through the duration of the Shine On Now program, you can to enter to win an American Girl doll, right here at From Dates to Diapers, for a deserving girl in your life. There are several ways to enter, but a separate comment must be left for each.

Here’s how you can earn your entries:

  • Answer the following questions — How does your family impact the local community for good? Perhaps you participate in community service activities, volunteer at your local food bank, or bring baked goodies to retirement homes. Whatever it is that you do, I’d love to hear about it!
  • “Like” Shine On Now on Facebook and leave the following message on the wall –I read about Shine On Now at FromDatestoDiapers.com and can’t wait to get involved!
  • Have the special girl in your life become an “Ambassador” for Shine On Now.
  • Did she donate her maximum of 100 stars today? (That’s a potential entry per day!)

A winner will be chosen on (or around) August 1st from all eligible entries now through July 31st. Winner will be notified by email.

I did not receive any monetary compensation for my partnership with American Girls and the Shine On Now program. I will, however, receive an American Girls doll in exchange for this post.

Our family helps our community by volunteering, and donating. We are active in our local church and the kids especially help by volunteering for nursery and VBS. We help with various drives for injured people in our community and local activites. My daughter helps our daycare by rocking the babies and helping the adults when they need it. In her girl scout group and 4H group they make goods for residents at the nursing home and collect toys for children in hospitals. She recently helped to raise money for St Judes which she was very proud of.

We impact our community by teaching in Title 1 (low-income) schools. My husband and I both are teachers in 2 different Title 1 schools. We work with kids daily, helping them grown into educated young adults.

Our family tries to participate in many community projects! Right now, I think many families are facing hard economic times. Our family tries to provide regular donations to our local food banks and especially to the clothing banks in the area. We have been so blessed, and in turn we share with others. Thanks for the great giveaway! Amanda

I would love this for my daughter Jozy. In her short little life she has had to deal with things most older people haven’t. Her daddy was deployed overseas to kuwait for a year and I have a neck and back injury that keeps me from playing with the kids and I am not able to work. Through all of this she is always the first to help and do what is needed. She deserves something that we are not able to get for her.

My family impacts our community and the environment in as many ways we can. We donate toys and clothes to local charities, participate in fundraisers, volunteer at local animal shelters when we can, and try our best to go green by cutting down on water and energy waste and recycling. I would love to win for my daughter, who plays a big role in our contribution to our community as well as our environment.

We run a weekly Bible club for kids at our church. Our main focus is military kids but we welcome any kids who want to come. My daughter, who is 10, helps by welcoming any new kid and befriending them. She makes sure that they know where to go and have someone to sit by. It’s a lot of work but we know it’s important to the kids.

Our family is all about donating. We even participated in a special Christmas party last year where all our guests brought one new toy and we donated them to a needing organization afterwards.

I am an avid coupon user, and with that comes many items for cheap and free. Items that my family will not use or does not use I donate, food, razors, anything that someone else could use. I donate to the food pantry and to people I know that need and can use the stuff. its great knowing that I can help other people just by doing something I already do and it can have a huge impact:)

We volunteer throughout the community with our Church and Scouting troops. We’ve participated in the NEST program (in which Churches offer temporary housing, food, and hygiene kits to the homeless), organizing food/toy/clothing drives throughout the year, and organizing materials to be sent to our troops overseas. We also donate our time in the soup kitchen and local library. We assist in our community clean-ups and organize the Beach Clean-up. Volunteerism and community involvement are extremely important to us as a family.

Our family helps out in the community by participating in food drives, volunteering in the schools, being active in the church and schools, and by donating clothes to those less fortunate. We feel it is important to take part in community activities and to help others. We need to take the focus off ourselves and help others.

I would love to nominate my niece Sierra, She is an amazing little girl. She is unfortunately in foster care right now and still tries to stay positive very tough thing to do in her situation, but she recently volunteered at summer school to help with putting away the books in the library from the summer reading program. She loves to read. She does not have any dolls or many toys, so I believe this would be a comfort to her, since she has no family near right now. I am 3,000 miles away from her but talk to her almost every night on the phone.
