Pregnant women and alcohol – Do they mix?

by Christine - From Dates to Diapers on November 19, 2010

I enjoyed an occasional glass of wine when I was pregnant with Timothy.

Now before you judge me too harshly, listen to this – A recent British study shows that light drinking will not negatively effect the emotional, physical or cognitive development of an unborn baby.

Suzanne Phan asked for my thoughts on this subject for a News 10 special report. Somehow my kiddos seemed to steal the show!

What do you think?
Did you (or would you) imbibe while pregnant? Why or why not?

I think it’s like you said a small occasional glass is fine. Those that are going to abuse alcohol will abuse it whether they’re pregnant or not. I think a little bit is fine and probably even good for you. If it wasn’t then most of Europe would have serious problems.

I’m certainly not going to judge a woman for the choice she makes for her body and her baby but personally, I wouldn’t ever drink during pregnancy.

I have had a few sips of wine or beer, but not a whole drink… Personally i feel like i wouldn’t even want to take the chance that there was any kind of effect.

Well, I thought it was particularly interesting that they would heap such guilt on mother’s by saying “don’t drink at all during the first trimester”. What does that do to those of us who don’t know we’re pregnant until 8, 10, or 12 weeks in? It’s not uncommon! I know I freaked out about the (few) drinks I’d had before I knew I was pregnant.
Everything in moderation. When I know I’m pregnant I most often turn down a drink. But I will take a sip off of my husband’s wine. I want to try it and I’m pretty sure I’m not going to hurt my baby any worse that way than by binging on any other kind of unhealthy food.
That being said I think we do have a propensity to over do everything in this country so I do hope that women don’t take this to mean that any kind of drinking they want to do while pregnant is okay. :)

I too enjoyed a glass of wine occasionally when I was pregnant. I did champagne toast sips at holiday parties and at weddings. My obgyn even said it was fine. Moms are going to be judged no matter what you do- same for breastfeeding vs not. You just have to get to the point where you know in your heart what’s right for you, and to heck with naysayers and gossip.

I have never had alcohol during any of my pregnancies BUT I would not crucify another mom for choosing to have an occasional glass of wine. There is a big difference between having an occasional glass of wine and drinking excessively to the point that it would probably hurt the baby. For me, I don’t think it’s worth the risk to even have the occasional glass of wine.

But I have indulged in my fair share of caffienated coffee during this pregnancy and I’m sure there are those who would gasp at the thought. To each his own, I guess (within reason)

Well, I was way too paranoid when pregnant to have a glass of wine, but I still drank cokes and ate fast food so…. great point though and I LOVE your honesty.

Okay, I have never been pregnant – not possible apparently.

But I think (and this is only my opinion- please don’t bite my head off) if somebody is unable to cut out drinking for nine months of their lives (and maybe longer if they are breastfeeding) then that shows a lack of respect for the unborn child.

Yes, there are conflicting studies as to the safety of consuming alcohol while pregnant. But surely if there is a 0.01% chance that it may be detrimental to the fetus then why take the chance?

Foregoing a nice Chardonnay, for a limited period of time, is a price well worth paying for peace of mind. Just my (male) two-cents worth.

Thanks.

Well I had one glass of wine while pregnant, I just made the mistake of doing it around someone who wanted to hurt me. Even taking a photo and posting it all over the internet. ONE glass and I’ll never live it down!

With Kaila I didn’t drink at all, but one glass when pregnant isn’t bad. In my eyes anyway. ;)
