Pondering the Miracle (while snug in your PJs) on Christmas Eve

by Christine - From Dates to Diapers on November 11, 2008

Growing up, Christmas Eve was never really celebrated like Christmas Day… We would visit Grandparents and head home to go to bed early, thinking Christmas morning would come faster if we were sleeping. The on Christmas morning we would take time to remember what Christmas is all about.

As Ray mentioned, I was a bit baffled by the new traditions I married in to…

Now, on Christmas Eve, I look forward to putting all my little kiddos in their pajamas, slipping on my slippers, making hot chocolate, and sitting around the Christmas tree to hear the story of how Jesus was born in a stable, as the Savior of the world. After the full story is read from the book of Luke, we exchange gifts (leaving a special one for Christmas morning, at my request) and thank God for the many ways He has blessed us.

My family spends our Christmas Eve going between my family and my husbands family. They each have a tradition of getting together on Christmas Eve so we’ve continued to do both families ever since we became a family 8 years ago. We go to my family first and then his. It sounds hectic but it really isn’t and we love getting to be with both on Christmas Eve.

My choice is the Child’s Fleece Pajama Set in the Penguin style in size Small.

rachael November 11, 2008 at 7:48 am

on christmas eve, we always (well, usually) have big elaborate dinner at my parents house, attempt to head out for midnight mass and make sure we watch an old version of a christmas carol. everyone gets new christmas pjs – there is always a theme and we usually open our ornaments and place them on the tree too! and of course…milk and cookies for santa!

i think either of the slippers would be my choice!

button added :)

Yanno, we’re like you were…we don’t much on Christmas Eve. Christmas Day is our big day. But on Christmas Eve we finish any last minute baking…..the kids do the pickle hunt and get a small gift for that (usually candy)…and the kids also get to open one present each. That’s about it.

If I win I’d like the women’s slippers, in Charcoal Heather, size 8. Lovely!!

I would love to win the child’s fleece pajama set.

Christmas Eve is when we are with my side of the family. We are Catholic and always go to Christmas Eve Mass, it’s beautiful. Then we come back and open gifts and eat. I love it. I’m the oldest of 10 children and it’s big and wonderful! =) I love it… my favorite part of CHristmas.

Kristie November 11, 2008 at 9:42 am

The night of Christmas Eve tends to be busy for us. We first meet up with my mom’s family for dinner and gifts, then we try to make it to the Christmas Eve service. After the service, we then go to my in-laws place. They like to do something special, like have everyone talk about a favorite Christmas memory and then we are each given 1 gift. We have to try to guess what it is first, but it is usually something along the lines of pajamas or slippers. It seems like a lot for 1 night, but my husband and I don’t want to give anything up and the kids are too young to have a say :-)
If I were to win, I love the Girls’ Angel Fleece PJ’s (3T, Scottie Dog).

If we go to my parents’ house for Christmas the evening is spent EATING, sitting by the fire and opening gifts with all of my family. At the end of the night one of the grandchildren places the baby Jesus in the manger and after the kids are in bed we watch “The Christmas Story” while we have a night cap!

I like the rich red slippers in size 8 please! : )

MrsAdams06 November 11, 2008 at 11:09 am

Every other Christmas we spend either in VA with my family, or in Canada with my husband’s family. On VA years, we go to my maternal grandfather’s house for a big get together with my large family. In Canada, we have a fondue night with his very small family. Very different evenings, but both so fun.

I would love to win the men’s slippers in size 9. My husband would like them a lot.

Chelle November 11, 2008 at 12:44 pm

Christmas Eve is spent by first going to church. After church we go and eat somewhere–usually a nice hot pizza. After that we drive around listening to Christmas carols and looking at the houses with lights up. There’s just something so magical and peaceful about Christmas Eve. I love it.

If I were to win I would really like the travel slippers. Thank you so much :)

Brenda November 11, 2008 at 1:06 pm

My family alternates years with in-laws…with my husband’s family we go to the evening church service and out afterwards to look at lights. Then it’s time for cookies and a few presents with the family. At my family’s we spend Christmas eve relaxing and enjoying cookies, pies, etc. The cousins get to play together a lot then. This year will be different though because it’s the first year without my dad. I think we may start a new tradition and remember him in some way.

At both places, we sprinkle “reindeer dust” outside and leave cookies and a Coke for Santa. :)

I would love to win the child’s pajamas in big boy M.

Like you, my husband and I brought different “gift day” traditions to our marriage. Growing up, we went to church on Christmas Eve, came home and ate a light/late dinner — usually consisting of wild rice soup (we lived in the upper midwest), and clam chowder, breadsticks, lefse (Norwegian), and rommegrot (also Norwegian) — about as “non traditional” as you can get! Following the meal, we’d gather around the tree. My Dad would usually read the Christmas story (sometimes my Grandma would). Then my brother and I would “play Santa” (we never believed in him) and pass out all the gifts. We’d go round and round the circle, each opening one gift at a time, until everyone had opened the last of their presents. Christmas Day was spent at one of the Grandparents’ houses with the bigger feast. We didn’t usually do Christmas morning gifts and/or stockings. Instead, it was a day spent with the family, playing games, eating, sometimes watching movies.

My husband’s family, on the other hand, did things completely different. Christmas Eve was church… I don’t think they did the big meal or gifts or anything else. Occasionally, I think they were able to open one gift each on Christmas Eve. It was Christmas morning, still dressed in PJs, that the gifts were opened. They also read the Christmas story. My favorite “new” tradition adopted from his family is that prior to opening gifts, we’d all go around the circle and share what had happened during the year. There are 4 adult children, all spread throughout the country, and Christmas is often the only time we’re all together. It’s a great time to catch up on the nitty gritty, share tears, share fears, share joys, and understand how best to pray for each other. After the “share fest” (which often becomes a cry-fest for the ladies), it’s present time. Each person gives all of their gifts out to the intended recipients and the gifts are then opened by GIVER rather than receiver.

It’s fun (and at times challenging) trying to incorporate 2 sets of traditions). Since we both live 10-24 hours from our respective parents, our own family’s “traditions” of late have been traveling to one family or the other. We’ve decided that, for now, our tradition is to make sure that FAMILY is at the center. The rest will fall into place — but Family must remain the core. And of course Jesus is the absolute center. :)

If chose, I’d love the PJs in a little boy’s 4T email: newwood2(at)gmail(dot)com — Thanks! :)

On Christmas Eve the whole family goes to 5pm Mass with my husband’s family and then we head over to my in-laws for dinner and opening presents. I’d love to win the kids pj set in size 4 for my son – if I win we’ll take his picture in them for our holiday card!

Typically on Christmas Eve, my husband and I have gone to my home town to enjoy a church service at the church we grew up in and then head back to my parent’s house for a full spread of drinks, appetizers and sweets.
This year we will be staying in the city we live now with our 1 year old son and spending the evening with our friends who have 2 little ones as well.

Tiff November 12, 2008 at 12:47 pm

Christmas Eve in my family has always been more magical than Christmas day. My family always let us pick one gift to open on Christmas Eve. I so loved this tradition that I have carried it on with my children. My husband thought I was crazy the first year I mentioned it, but he now LOVES this tradition. In our home every Christmas Eve we spend the evening baking cookies for Santa(last year we bought Oreos instead b/c my daughter thought he’d prefer them); we leave Santa a glass of milk, usually chocolate. We usually watch The Polar Express b/c it’s my daughter’s favorite movie and now we have the book so I will most likely be reading that to them this year. We let them open one gift each and my husband and I do the same. After we tuck them into bed the rest of the night my husband and I set up all of the unwrapped gifts from Santa and fix up the stockings with goodies. Then we secretly do each others stockings. We cut off the lights and sit by a fire with the Christmas lights on and watch old Christmas movies and cuddle while eating the cookies. My favorite night of the year.

Now that I’m a Mother I like to read my kids the story of Christ’s birth (the reason we have Christmas) we always make homemade pizza (weird I know, but it’s what we do) Then we will sing some songs, then read the night before Christmas. Then we ALWAYS open a new pair of jammies for everyone. You have to look nice in the morning while I video tape! Then it’s off to bed for the kiddos while I stay up all night putting together train sets and Barbie houses.

We keep things pretty low key during the holidays.

Well, I live with my Mom and Dad and we just keep it between us and my Brother who moved out last year. He will probably come over Christmas Day. As far as Christmas Eve goes it pretty simple. We just make sure what gifts we have are already wrapped or whatever. On Christmas Day, it’s just the 4 of us spending time together and my Mom and I cook a nice meal. Though this year is really a strain on everyone. We have to cut back on everyone except for our immediate family. Out of the three listed gifts, I’d love to win a size 6 slippers in Rich Red! purposedrivenlife4you (at) gmail (dot) com

Christmas Eve is stressful but so wonderful. We go to my in-laws’ house for lunch and then run like heck to my parents’ house for the evening. We sing for our presents and catch up and usually don’t leave until well after midnight. Then we head home and get ready for the kids to wake us in a few hours. It’s so amazing!

we’re Jewish so it’s not really a big deal, we get Chinese Food because none of the Chinese Food places are open on Christmas.

I’d really love the Men’s Regular Low Shearling Moc Slippers in a size 9, those look really cool!

On CHristmas eve we get the kids ready for bed, read ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas and snuggle down for a bit to watch part of It’s a Wonderful Life. When the kids start to get sleepy, we put out the cookies for Santa and the carrots for the reindeer, then we have a few cookies ourselves and brush teeth. Then everyone goes to bed, ’cause Santa can’t come until you’re asleep!
I would love to give the Men’s Regular Low Shearling Mocs in dark brown size 11 th DH, he could use new slippers.

We got to Mass, come home, eat dinner, and then open family presents. It’s wonderful just talking and laughing with the family.

I would choose the women’s slippers!

Our Family November 24, 2008 at 7:22 am

Our family starts out the evening by attending our Candlelight service at church, then come home and have Grammy & Grampy over to exchange ornament's, open Christmas PJ's from Grammy & Grampy, then set out cookies and go to bed with great anticipation :)

I would prob choose the slipper's in rich red!!!

On Christmas Eve we get Chinese food and drive around looking at lights then set out cookies and carrots for Santa. My son would love the St. Bernard pajamas.

We eat at my inlaws. My 4 months old son is going to be Baby Jesus in the Christmas play at our Church. I would like to win the pj’s for my 2 year old.

We spend Christmas Eve with my Sister and her family. The cousins are all so close in age and the drive to and from is about an hour, so we listen to carols and enjoy the Christmas displays.
It is very nice.
I’d like to win the Pjs for kids.
