Play more, Eat right, & Push away the screen

by Christine - From Dates to Diapers on May 25, 2009

SUBWAY recently partnered with the National Institute of Health and their We Can! program (Ways to Enhance Children’s Activity and Nutrition), encouraging kids to push away the TV screen. In celebration of this partnership, our family received a P.E.P. Rally kit to help jump start outdoor activities with our kiddos. The box was delivered on a gorgeous day last month and soon the sidewalk chalk, jump ropes, nurf footballs, and frisbees were in the hands of six very happy kiddos.

We Can! Program

The goal behind these kits is to get parents and kids excited about being up and active, now that the weather is nice and summer is just about here. I can tell you, this kit did just that for my family… We enjoyed outside play for hours!

Do you and your kiddos need a little extra coaxing to get moving outside? I have a P.E.P. Rally kit for one of you to win. In fact, your activity kit will include a SUBWAY gift card, as well, to help your family accomplish the goals to play more, eat right and push away the screen!

Here’s how to enter:
.

  • Leave me a comment on this post, by 9pm on June 5th, telling me about your favorite outdoor activities and how you plan to play more, eat right and push away the screen this summer.

  • For additional entries feel free to blog about your summer plans and include a link to this giveaway in your post, send a tweet, or leave the link to this giveaway on your Facebook page. Be sure to leave me a separate comment with a link to your blog, post, tweet, or Facebook page.

  • You may also subscribe to my blog feed for yet another entry, and leave me a comment saying you did so. You must remain a subscriber during the entire duration of this giveaway.

One lucky winner will be chosen at random, at 9pm on June 5th, and will be notified via email. Make sure you leave a valid email address in your comments.

My favorite outdoor activity with the kids is to swim in our pool then dry off by jumping on the trampoline.

We love to take little “hiking” adventures in the mountains, jump on our trampoline, run through the sprinkler, picnic at the park, and visit the zoo. We’re already enjoying the warm weather and hardly ever turning on the TV most days. Anytime we can get outside, we take full advantage. After dinner, instead of a show, we usually take a family walk. Thanks for the fun giveaway!

Chris May 25, 2009 at 8:19 pm

We love to go “letterboxing”. Basically, people hide little boxes with stamps in them in public locations. They give directions on how to find them and then you look for them and use their stamp to mark a blank page. Go to letterboxing.org for more info on how to do it. This activity gets our family out and walking to explore the area around where we live. We typically pack a picnic and then choose a location from the website. A lot of the ones we’ve searched for are in or near parks, so it gives us the opportunity to check out a new playground too. The kids love the adventure and we have a great time exploring and exercising as a family!

We love to swim and play soccer as a family.

Joyce May 25, 2009 at 10:47 pm

I just had my 2nd baby, so I’m definitely going to try to get moving this summer. We’ll be walking around the lake. We also have a veggie garden, so that will make for some great salads.

We walk constantly in the summers, all through my parents new property now, since they sold their last house!! Many days spent at the park and I cant wait for softball games, badmitton and bbq’s!!

kristin May 26, 2009 at 12:33 pm

My fav. outdoor activity isn’t a summer one, I LOVE to snowboard! But this summer since we will have the new baby I’m hoping to hike, camp, maybe even bike (with one of those buggies) anything to get out whole family up and moving.

becca May 26, 2009 at 7:54 pm

We love spending time at busch gardens and water country!! Our seasons passes allow for a lot of summer fun. We always pack our lunch so we don’t have to buy lunch there!!

Jaque May 27, 2009 at 10:09 am

My favorite outdoor activity is hiking in wooded, secluded areas….harder find each year! This summer I am eating large salads as at least one meal daily and am planning lots of home renovation activities both inside and out.

Thank you. :-)

My favorite outdoor activity with the kids is playing on the swimgset/playground & going for walks around the neighborhood. I plan on eating better by simply getting more active. When I know I’ve burned calories walking for instance, I am more likely to eat healthy.

Teresa May 27, 2009 at 11:38 am

We love to do things outside during the summer months. Biking, walking, swimming are all things I try to do with the kids as much as possible to push them away from the TV screen. I always try to have healthy snacks available all the time in the house.

:) Thank you for the wonderful giveaway! :)

I plan on letting the kids play more water activities, going to the lake, playing in the sprinkler, slip & slide, city pool, etc. It’s the best way to keep cool!

israel y May 27, 2009 at 12:19 pm

Our favorite outdoor activities are playing in the parks, biking, and swimming on the beach. We love the summer! and I even find it a little easier to push away that TV in the summer when all the TV shows are in reruns.

denise May 27, 2009 at 12:20 pm

We love to go for walks and play at our neighborhood park. It is easy to eat right when your kids have 3 major food allergies. It keeps us from eating processed foods at home and it makes it so that we cannot eat outas a family. denise_22315(at)yahoo(dot)com

JoAnn May 27, 2009 at 12:36 pm

We spend our summers out and about enjoying the many kids activities offered free every summer through a variety of sources. Some of these include visiting wading pools and spraygrounds and seeing a concert or kids’ program at a nearby park. There are so many opportunities we are rarely home!

That helps with our eating habits as well. We tend to eat sandwiches, fruit, and water as our outing lunches. At home, we eat a lot of salads during the summer.

Jackie May 27, 2009 at 12:42 pm

I’m disabled, so outdoor activity is pretty hard for me. However, my family makes the effort and we like to take strolls (or rolls, if your me) around our little country town, with a “scavenger” list of things to find. My daughter brings her “magnetifying” glass and a basket for her collection.

Pat May 27, 2009 at 1:32 pm

At our house we like to go for long hikes. We’re trying more vegetarian recipes so we can increase our consumption of fresh vegetables and fruits. We bought a converter box for our old TV but couldn’t figure out how to install it; we can’t watch TV any more because now it doesn’t work at all. Thank you for the contest.

Irene May 27, 2009 at 1:40 pm

This summer we are having it all- the boys are on swim team, so they are out there working hard everyday. Then because they didn’t get enough swimming, we go back to the pool and just play and bbq. We have a few camping trips lined up, a few baseball games, Some short trips to enjoy the California scenery and history, riding bikes and of course growing a veggie garden so that they can try some new veggies this summer!

You all enjoy your summer too!

Erica C. May 27, 2009 at 2:06 pm

we buy outdoor water games…and it keeps the kids outside playing for hours!

adrienne Gordon May 27, 2009 at 2:15 pm

we do family running races and also camp and hike. We eat healthy to begin with, but burning calories is the best way.

Carol May 27, 2009 at 2:39 pm

We live in a four-season community, so the warm weather will definitely get us outside, unlike the winter. We live by a lake so we’ll be swimming and sailing. We also like fruits in the summer, they are more available and taste better.

Swimming, frisbee and volleyball. We plan to spend more time exploring our state this summer as well as the regular stuff we do.
In the summer at least 4 days a week we eat cold salads for dinner- when it is hot we eat a lot lighter. Which hopefully means we look better in our swimsuits and shorts. ;)
