Outrageous, but not surprising…

Subway wants to hear stories from children to enter their Every Sandwich Tells A Story Contest. Well, they are refusing entries from my children. Why? Because my children are home schooled.

Here are the official rules straight from the site:

NO PURCHASE NECESSARY TO ENTER OR WIN. Contest is open only to legal residents of the Untied States who are currently over the age of 18 and have children who attend elementary, private or parochial schools that serve grades PreK-6. No home schools will be accepted. (emphasis mine)

Subway not only spelled United States wrong (Untied States), but as you can see offers a Scholastic Gift Bastket for your home as part of the grand prize.

Maybe my home schooled kiddos should have proofread their contest page.

To take action against this ridiculous discrimination you can tell Subway what you think, or sign the petition to boycott Subway. I will be doing both.

I’m thinking I may even have the kids write and submit a story anyway. What would happen if home schooled kids all over the country entered anyway?

One of them would most likely win.

I can’t believe they had such an obvious spelling error! And I’d also think they had to see this coming- deliberately excluding homeschoolers! I’m sure there could be a prize alternative if your child doesn’t attend a school!

Every sandwich does indeed tell a story, doesn’t it? Not sure they’d want my kids to write–both of them have blogged about this as well!

i kind of get it. It’s obviously a school fund raiser over a personal contest. HOWEVER, there should be a division clause which allows homeschoolers to compete under different guidelines with different (less school sized) prizes…

Wow, this really saddens me.. I was homeschooled ever since K-5 and I believe homeschoolers have just as much right as any child who is in a public or private school.. When is the world going to except that learning at home isn’t a bad thing? Heck all the kid movie stars are practically homeschooled or have a tutor “at home”!

I plan on homeschooling all of my children.

I’m sorry that you all feel mistreated by Subway but honestly they are allowed to have a contest and aim it towards a specific audience (grade school children in an elementary school) because the prize they have to give away is not for a home but a school. Not all contests or sweepstakes are for everyone. I doubt Subway was intentionally trying to discriminate or leave out children but the prize is geared for a school full of children not a home with a few children. There are lots of contests out there that your children do qualify to enter so why not put your energy towards those instead of putting your energy negatively towards Subway. Sorry but that is just my opinion.
