Moon Dough

My kiddos were extremely excited to try the new Moon Dough Barnyard Playset that we received just before our vacation. Well, I pulled it out today and let them all go to town…

Not only is Moon Dough incredibly messy, but it was difficult for my youngest little guys – the targeted age for this set -to use the mold in just such a way to actually create the barn animals. Noah lost interest fairly quickly, but the twins came to the rescue and were able to create smooth and consistent cows, roosters and sheep for Ben.

Moon Dough looks and feels like wet sand before molded, however it resembles big, fluffy marshmallows when molded into fun shapes. All in all, I think my kiddos enjoyed making a huge mess, mixing the three colors that came with the set, and squishing the dough between their fingers.

I’m thinking that, although the dough is never supposed to dry out and it really is easy to clean up, we would need to purchase Moon Dough Refill Packs if the kiddos ever want to play with it again. I suppose it’d be fun to add a few more colors to the mix!

I received this playset to review as a member of Team Mom. No monetary compensation was received. As always, all opinions are mine.

    Hi, Christine,

“Every kid is creative; the only thing is it needs a way to come out to get known to others.” It becomes a parent’s job to give him the opportunity and space to explore.
All I want to say here is the creativity which lies within your kiddos is reflected by their play with the moon dough. Just enjoy the way they do all, mixing the colors, how harder they give efforts for giving a definite shape to the dough and then the joy on their face on getting done the shape they really wanted. I think you did enjoy.

Lovely photos too! Seems, so busy playing Kids!

My 4 year old got this for Christmas and LOVES it. Of course we only have 1 color – how on earth can you keep the colors seperated or prevent the joy of mixing colors in a child – but she has been playing with this stuff for hours. Most parents reviewing this HATE it because of the crumbly mess. I’m with you though it is really easy to clean up and I showed her how to take a ball of the stuff and dab it on the crumbles to collect them off of the carpet. Although she had fun makeing the farm animals she has spent more time using cookie cutters and playdough texturing plates. I know I will be buying other colors (that will also get mixed) and she and her 6 year old sister will have many hours of fun creating and playing with moon dough.

We just got some for Christmas for our just-turned-3 son. It is way too messy and the molds never release correctly. We now have a bunch of yellow dough stuck somewhere inside the barn, as 1 of every 2 animals did not come out of the mold right. The hay and fence are also very difficult to remove from the molds. I would never purchase it again, nor could I recommend it to anyone. My son had fun with it, but he pretty quickly headed back to his Little People barn with animals that don’t crush.
