Love Between Brothers and Sisters

by Christine - From Dates to Diapers on November 29, 2009

When I was about thirteen years old, my parents had my siblings and me memorize this poem by Isaac Watts. You know, my brothers, sisters and I can still recite it from memory almost twenty years later!

It is a great poem to have your children recite in front of each other after a quarrel!

Love Between Brothers and Sisters
(by Isaac Watts)

Whatever brawls disturb the street,
There should be peace at home;
Where sisters dwell, and brothers meet,
Quarrels should never come.

Birds in their little nests agree;
And ’tis a shameful sight,
When children of one family
Fall out, and chide, and fight.

Hard names at first, and threat’ning words,
That are but noisy breath,
May grow to clubs and naked swords,
To murder and to death.

The devil tempts one mother’s son
To rage against another:
So wicked Cain was hurry’d on
‘Till he had kill’d his brother.

The wise will make their anger cool,
At least before ’tis night;
But in the bosom of a fool
It burns till morning-light.

Pardon, O Lord, our childish rage
Our little brawls remove;
That, as we grow to riper age,
Our hearts may all be love.

My 2 yo and I sing a song every night by Sixpence None the Richer that’s based on Proverbs 3:5. I want it ingrained deep in there so he can always cling to it.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart
Lean not on your own understanding
In all of your ways acknowledge Him
And He will make your paths straight
Don’t worry about tomorrow
He’s got it under control
Just trust in the Lord with all of your heart
And He will carry you through

Christine,
I love this!!! Sadly I was not taught to memorize anything so sweet. You have just added a new poem to memorize for our family though. I really like this, thanks for sharing!

My two year old has a few short Bible verses memorized. Including,
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Ephesians 6:1
We heard him singing all the words to “Ba ba black sheep” and thought why not try memory verses, it worked!!

I just saw this tweeted (is that how you say it?) :) and had to chime in because just today I typed out the bible verse Eph. 4:32 (paraphrased for my kids) “Be kind to each other” in colorful bold letters so that I can remind my two and a half year old twins what God has to say about how we treat one another. I assume if I remind them every time they argue or steal a toy that they will have it memorized very soon! :)

My son graduated last spring so our favorite verse I liked to remind him of is Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you declared the Lord, plans to prosper you ant not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Thought it fitting, I would write it on little note cards & stick in his back pack or books every now & then. I used it with a photo collage at his graduation party too.
