Let’s talk about food for a minute.
Really I could talk about it all day, because… well, I pretty much think about food all day.
I’d like to blame my recent food obsession on this baby I’m growing. You see, I can’t wait until I’m hungry to eat. In fact, I haven’t experienced hunger pangs for several weeks now. Instead, I wait until the nausea kicks in. Nausea caused by the simple fact that I am pregnant. Nausea that I feel when I do not eat. Because, unless I am literally putting some sort of food in my mouth, I am nauseous. I wake up nauseous, thus I wake up thinking about food. I lie in bed, tired as can be at the end of a long day, and think about food, all due to the fact that I am nauseous.
Now, let’s talk about cravings.
When I am craving a certain food, my palette is not satisfied until I’ve consumed said craving. With few exceptions these cravings must be satisfied by my own hand; meaning I must prepare whatever it is my body tells me I need. Lucky for my family I’ve insisted on making Fried Chicken, Tacos, and Grilled BBQ Chicken this week, simply because I was craving these things.
Some of my most recent cravings ::
Kool-Aid
Burritos {just like those my Mom makes}
Cupcakes
Greek Salad
Cinnamon Streusel Muffins
Strawberries
Cupcakes
Cheddar Cheese and Apple Slices {yes, together}
Breakfast Casserole
Did I mention cupcakes?
My wonderful husband has made me Breakfast Burritos twice in one day, and many a night will you find me in the kitchen looking for food, long after the rest of my family is asleep and snoring. Why? Yep, you guessed it – I’m either nauseous or craving something specific.
So, I have a question for you ::
I know the nausea is real, but are these cravings all in my head?
I’m sure Ray would like to think so.

Ugh… I remember that nausea… it’s so strange how the only time you don’t feel nauseous is when you’re actually eating. It was exactly like that for me too.
It’s funny b/c I experience nausea from stress too and it feels very similar except that my pg nausea causes me to eat to get relief but my stress nausea can’t handle food.
I hope your nausea goes away soon.
All the best!

I don’t think all food cravings are all in your head. I believe that certain cravings are your body’s way of getting something that it needs. I’m having a hard time coming up with the biological need that is filled by cupcakes, but I’m sure you have another commenter that can be more creative.

I’d say yes and no. With my first pregnancy I seemed to always crave Dr. Pepper & fruit flavored candy. With my second and third pregnancies I was too busy to notice too many cravings. However, with at least one of them I had a serious craving for oranges and pineapple. I once ate a whole pineapple in one day by myself. And I always craved beef in my first trimester. So, I’d say cravings like apples, cheese, strawberries, greek salad, etc. are cravings that are telling you that your body needs the nutrients found in these foods. And you MIGHT be able to justify the cupcakes, but I’d be more likely to say that the craving for sugar (cupcakes & KoolAid) might just be in your head. Thankfully, I didn’t have much nausea & mine never lasted past the first trimester, but I do understand what you’re talking about with wanting to eat all the time to relieve the nausea.
Oh do I remember the nausea. I had it the worst with my first two pregnancies. I was all day long for 13 weeks. UGH!!! But I couldnt eat anything but carbs. With my 3rd I was able to eat real food but still was nausous. But your right, the nausea would subside for the short time it took to actually eat.
I never really had many cravings though. I just longed for my red wine!!!
Good Luck! Somehow we forget how bad it really is but are so easily reminded. Thankfully for most it disappears the 2nd trimester.

Oh my goodness you hit the nail on the head for me with this post. I feel the exact same way! Or did. At about 16 weeks it seemed to subside. Now I just feel ravenous!
This has been so different for me. With Graham I had no cravings, felt great, nothing at all. We will find out on Wednesday!

Oh please don’t remind me of the nausea. I got really lucky with 2 of the 3 kids, but my second one got me bad with all day, all night nausea. The only thing that ever helped was hot tea with a slice of fresh ginger root and giving into the cravings.
Some doctors say the cravings are your body’s way of telling you what nutrients you need … although I’m not sure the cupcakes qualify.
But since you’re in the cake mood, feel free to click my recipe link below … with oranges in there it’s not all bad. lol

Ok. I think the cravings are totally real. It’s funny because I have 2 girls with a boy sandwiched in between. I got super nauseous with both the girls a craved sweets. The the boy I only got nauseous when I was hungry. Then, I was hungry for “food” (Meat, Potatoes, etc).
Some people say that you can’t tell, but you can ask my husband. When I started feeling super sick and craving ice cream with number 3, I called it. GIRL!
