We all need to continue to be aware of the effects the sun’s rays has on our skin, even in these last few days of summer. Eucerin has some great advice for us…

While basking in the sun can feel replenishing and bring us a sense of both mental and physical renewal, the amount of vitamin D our bodies need on a daily basis can be absorbed in just the first 15 minutes of our exposure to the sun. Understanding the factors affecting our skin’s reaction to the sun can help us plan our time in the sun.
Factor #1 – Sunlight
The strength of sunlight is the main factor for the quantity of UV radiation your skin can be exposed to. Latitude, altitude, time of day, season and cloud coverage can all have a dramatic effect on the sun’s impact on our skin. Even reflected sunlight from windows, pavement, water, snow and sand can raise the risk of overexposure.
Factor #2 – Skin Color
As skin color is determined by the amount of melanin present in the skin, ethnicity can also play a large role in sun exposure. Often a result of a group’s distance from the equator (and its stronger sunlight), darker skins are more resistant to the effects of sunlight than fairer skins. African-Americans, for example, are 20 times less likely to develop melanoma than those with white skin. Conversely, one study found that African-American women aged 15 to 49 have more than 20 times the risk of vitamin D deficiency than Caucasians. Different skin colors will react to UV rays at different speeds. So one should be mindful of her skin’s susceptibilities when considering her exposure time or adding protection.
FACTOR #3 – Sunscreen
The strength of sunscreen is determined by its Sun Protection Factor (SPF), a number that measures the amount of UV radiation required to sunburn with the sunscreen on, relative to the amount that would burn skin without it. For example, SPF-15 allows about 1/15 (about 6%) of the UV rays that would penetrate the skin without the sunscreen on. SPF-30 would allow 1/30 (about 3%) and so on.
We can make skincare a priority by considering these factors and being active in protecting our skin. Will you pledge with me, through Eucerin’s Facebook application, to put the health of your skin FIRST?
Once you have made your pledge come back here, because Eucerin has given me two goody bags, each containing a $50 Sunglass Hut gift card and Eucerin Everyday Protection Lotion in 15 and 30, to give away. Leave me a comment with your best tip for protecting your skin to enter and I will choose two random winners on August 31st. (Winners will be notified by email shortly thereafter.)

When it’s summer and we are out in the hot sun, we naturally do feel the fear of getting our skin damaged by the ultraviolet rays in the sun-light.
The tips that I feel can help one out are:
While you are planning to go for outing, if possible wear white colored or some light colored outfit that actually has a scientific base as the white color reflects the sunlight thus blocking the entry of the sun rays to your body; try out it works, you will feel less heat than when you are in your dark outfit.
Plenty of water during the day is enough to wash out your wastes and toxic products that can harm your skin in anyways. So start drinking more fluids and juices, too if you like.
If you are the one more conscious about your skin, why not wear an outfit that exposes less, (personal preference anyways!) as it will avoid your skin exposure to the sunlight.
Natural remedies anyhow are at their best in skin protection and bring glow to your skin. Pointing to the aloe vera for example, have it at home; it’s good.
Likely I do agree with the use of reliable, correct and effective sunscreen lotions that you already mention.
My best tip for protecting your skin is to always wear sunscreen.

I use a moisturizer with spf and try to cover my arms and hands while driving.
I just made the pledge! The health of our skin is super important. Sometimes I am embarassed that my skin “glows in the dark” from being so white. I have the ability to tan but choose not to, why? Because in the long run it isn’t important. In twenty years I will have healthy and beautiful skin and that is what is important.
Overall, I think it is important to be a friend to others. I know it takes time and it feels like a waste to put on sunscreen, but it is important to remind yourself and others to reapply after 80 minutes of sun exposure and to put it on 15 minutes before you ever leave your house. These steps will help us stay beautiful for years to come!
Wear a big floppy sun hat to protect your face!
sunscreen yearround and don’t forget the hands
The Best Tip I Can Say is: Forget the stress, take some rest; Eat healthy, drink better; cover up your skin (sunscreens) and you will be forever good-lookin ! Skin health matters….Yeahh…! We must take care of our skin.

Moisturizer w/sunscreen for your face and general sunscreen for your body
I am very careful in the sun and always carry sunscreen in my purse. I am a very fair skinned redhead and when I was 30, I developed a squamous cell carcinoma on my face. Luckily it was removed with no problem, but ever since then, I am very aware of the sun year round.
My best tip is to always wear sunscreen & sunglasses to protect your eyes as well!
Wear Sunscreen and a big wide brimmed hat.
Thanks for the chance.

I took the pledge. One thing I learned the hard way,if you take medicine that says to be careful while being out in the sun please do that
I took the pledge! This has become a very important issue for me over this past summer. I had an accident in the kitchen and got 2′nd degree burns on 30% of my body. I am all healed now but have scarring. I have to avoid direct sun exposure because it could cause a flare up again. I’ve learned that long sleeves and pants help along with big floppy hat. Remember even if you are just sitting in the car you are still exposed to the sun to slather on the sunscreen. Also skin protection is not just during the summer but also during the winter months.
I pledged at Eucerin facebook page. I try not to be out in direct sunlight between 10 and 2 when the rays are strongest. But if I have to I always use a sunblock.
