#epicfail Cake-Style

by Christine - From Dates to Diapers on September 4, 2010

WiltonI had the extreme privilege of attending the fabulous Wilton Mom ReTreat, a couple of months ago, and learned so much from two master cake decorators. I was anxious to put in to practice everything I learned from these ladies, but this pregnancy is kicking my butt, and I just haven’t had the energy to make and decorate cakes of late.

I did, however, try.

One day I was feeling particularly energetic. Perhaps my desire for cake is what spurred me on, more so than any perceived energy. Anyhow, I pulled out a couple of boxes of cake mix, all of the ingredients and all of my new Wilton goodies – Ultrgold bakeware, Bake-Even Strips, shiny new baking tools and my bottle of Cake Release.

All appeared to be going well with the baking process, as the aroma of cake wafted through the entire house. As the timer counted down, I gathered all of my tools for the decorating process – my turntable, cake leveler, and boxes of fondant. I was so excited to try my hand at covering a two-layer round cake with fondant!

But, alas, it was not meant to be. Even though the two beautifully golden round cakes came out looking scrumptious, they tasted horrible! I couldn’t understand what was wrong with them, as I nibbled on the remnants from leveling each one.

Then it dawned on me – I checked the cake mix boxes for an expiration date and, sure enough, it was well past the date stamped. I was so upset that I was in tears, much to my kids’ dismay, and I haven’t mustered up the energy to try again.

I will, however, try again. One of these days. And when I do, you will be the first to see the finished cake!

What a bummer. That’s weird- I know dry goods have expiration dates but I didn’t think it really affected the finished product. I wonder why it affected the taste?

Awww I’m so sorry! What a lot of work for that to happen (especially when you weren’t feeling up to it in the first place!). I didn’t realize that expired cake mix would alter the flavor either, unless it was REALLY old. Better luck next time :)

Christine! I know all too well about culinary disasters. Someday I’ll tell you about the vanilla soymilk pasta fiasco…..

This one wasn’t your fault….
