Since I’ve been talking a lot about breakfast lately, and have also been blogging a bit about breast cancer awareness, I wanted to tell you about Folgers’ partnership with the National Breast Cancer Foundation. This month, Folgers is supporting breast cancer research and education for underserved women, with its limited edition Pink Can, which is now available in grocery stores and convenience stores, nationwide.
In addition to the Pink Can, and some good information, folgers.com is also offering a “wake up call” e-card that you can send to loved ones to make them aware of breast health and the importance of early detection.
Tips for Good Breast Health
- Physical activity, a healthy diet, and a healthy weight can help reduce the risk of getting breast cancer.
- All women age 40 and older should get an annual mammogram and an annual clinical breast exam.
- Women age 20 to 39 should have a clinical breast exam at least every three years.
- From age 20, women who choose to do a breast self-exam should receive instruction and have their technique reviewed at the time of their periodic health examination.
- Women at increased risk (e.g., family history, genetic tendency, past breast cancer) should talk with their doctors about the benefits and limitations of starting mammography screening earlier, having additional tests (i.e., breast ultrasound and MRI), or having more frequent exams.
Would you like to win a Folgers Pink Can? I have 2 to give away!
Here’s what you have to do:
- Leave me a comment with your favorite coffee flavor, before 9pm (pacific) on October 28th.
- For an extra entry in the random drawing, feel free to subscribe to my blog feed. You must remain a subscriber at least through the duration of this contest to qualify for a second entry. Make sure you leave me a separate comment saying you subscribed.
- Two lucky commenters, chosen at random, will each win a Folgers Pink Can. The winners will be notified via email, so make sure you leave a valid email address in your comment.
Good luck!
This giveaway is now closed. The winners were Barbara and kristilb19!

Thanks to the American Egg Board, in the last few days I’ve been able to glean a lot about choline, and the effects it has in our bodies. I was excited to learn that there are many benefits of choline – choline has been shown to help with brain and memory development in infants and helps reduce the risk of heart disease and breast cancer. But, I was saddened to hear that research also shows that only 1 in 10 women have enough choline in their diet.
Choline and Decreased Risk of Breast Cancer
There have been a few studies that have shown that women who eat eggs have a lower risk of developing breast cancer. The facts have blown me away!
- One study found that women who reported higher consumption of eggs, vegetable fat and fiber during adolescence had a smaller risk of developing breast cancer as adults. Can you believe that eating one egg, per day, was associated with an 18 percent reduced risk of breast cancer?!
- Another study showed that those who consumed the most fruit, vegetables and eggs were significantly less likely to have breast cancer. For those that reported eating at least six eggs per week, the risk of developing breast cancer was 44 percent lower than for those who ate two or less eggs per week!
What exactly is choline?
Choline is an essential nutrient needed for many of life’s most basic functions including normal functioning of all cells, liver metabolism and the transportation of nutrients throughout the body.
Although choline is produced within the body, it must also be consumed in our diet. It is found in foods such as beef liver, chicken liver, eggs, beef steak, cod, broccoli, peanut butter and milk.
In our efforts to raise breast cancer awareness, I would love if you could help spread the word about choline!

Both of my Grandmothers are breast cancer survivors. Countless friends have been effected by this disease. Countless more will be. I am eager to do my part in bringing awareness to women everywhere about what to look for and how to detect early signs of breast cancer.
I won’t pretend to know it all – in fact, I know very little – but, beginning on October 6th, I will try to bring you some helpful tips and ways to take precautions against breast cancer. Here, at From Dates to Diapers, we will also be sharing ways to help those effected, and provide opportunities for you to get involved. And, of course, there will be a few giveaways, as well!
One of the ways you can begin to participate now in raising awareness is with Project Pink…
Now through the end of October, Munchkin is playing a small part in helping moms focus on their own health by putting a spotlight on breast cancer prevention. Project Pink is a program that raises money for Susan G. Komen for the Cure and reminds moms, “don’t duck a breast exam.”
Here are some ways you can be a part of this campaign:
- Email A Duck, Raise A Buck – This viral component enables individuals to email friends a virtual duck that reminds them to participate in routine breast exams. Users may track their ducks as they get forwarded around, and in turn, Munchkin will donate $0.05 to Susan G. Komen for the Cure for every duck forwarded.
- Buy Your Own Duck – Created to be a visual reminder of routine breast exams, Munchkin’s 2008 limited edition Project Pink Bath Ducks will be available online and at select retailers nationwide for $3.00. One hundred percent of the net profits from the sale of these ducks will be donated to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
- Celebrity Duck eBay Auction – Celebrity participants, from Courteney Cox to Matthew McConaughey, have shown support of Project Pink by donating hand-decorated and autographed limited edition ducks. Each week in October, during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a number of celebrity-decorated ducks will be available for auction exclusively on eBa,y with all proceeds benefiting the Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
So, whether you buy a pink duck or simply spread the word, you can help Munchkin help moms stay healthy so we can continue being great parents.
