Host an Allie Finkle Book Club Party with Your Daughter

by Christine - From Dates to Diapers on December 13, 2010

Julia and I both love to read, so we were excited to be introduced to the fun series of books for tween girls called Allie Finkle’s Rules for Girls, by Meg Cabot (of The Princess Diaries fame). Allie is just a 9-year-old girl who’s just trying to make sense out of the 4th grade, so she jots down rules to help herself remember how to be a good sister, student and friend. My favorite rule, of course, is treat your friends the way you’d want them to treat you. But, Allie is not opposed to making up rules of her own, like do not eat anything red. Yes, that’s an actual rule!

In Book 1: Moving Day, when Allie Finkle’s parents announce that the family is moving from their suburban split-level into an ancient Victorian house in town, Allie’s sure her life is over. With a new room she’s half-scared to go into, the burden of being the “new girl,” and her old friends all a half-hour car ride away, how will Allie ever learn to fit in?

With Meg Cabot’s signature wit and amazing ability to channel girls, Allie is a winning character with real problems, lots of spunk, and is bound to be everyone’s favorite fourth grader.

Does your daughter love to read, as much as mine does? Why not enter to win an Allie Finkle party package, including a $100 VISA card and 10 copies of Allie Finkle Book 1: Moving Day, so you and your daughter can host a book club party!? Just leave me a comment, before 9pm (pst) on December 29th, telling me about your daughter’s favorite passtime. A winner will be chosen, at random, and notified by email.

Happy Reading!

Borders’ Double-Dog Dare Summer Reading Challenge

by Christine - From Dates to Diapers on June 10, 2010

Even though most of my older kiddos love to read, now that summer is here and all of the neighbor kids are knocking on our door, I’m having a tough time getting them to sit still with a book. Even my younger tykes would rather be running around outside or playing on their new park than sitting with me to listen to a story.

Well, I’ve teamed up with Borders this month to bring you tips on encouraging your young’ens to read. Maybe these tips will help me and my kiddos, too.

HarperCollins and Jon Scieszka, author of Robot Zot and Knucklehead: Tall Tales and Almost True Stories of Growing up Scieszka, have provided this week’s tip::

“If you want to inspire your boy reader, expand your definition of reading to include non-fiction, graphic novels, funny books, wordless books, audio books and magazines. Summer reading is a great time to explore texts that aren’t covered/allowed in school reading.”

To further foster a love of reading in your offspring this summer, Borders is hosting the Double-Dog Dare Summer Reading Challenge in stores across the country through the end of August. To participate, kids up to age 12 can read any 10 books they want, list them on a special form, and return the form to Borders for a free book!

DoubleDogDare-251x300

To give you and your kiddos a jump start on the dare, Borders is offering my friends a chance to win one of two (2) $100 Borders gift cards!

There are three ways to enter, but you must leave a separate comment for each entry to count:

  • What are your own tips for getting kids to read?
  • Tell me about your favorite book as a child.
  • Tweet the following -Encourage your kids to read w/ @Border’s Double-Dog Dare Summer Reading Challenge & enter to win 1 of 2 $100 gift cards http://bit.ly/afROVL

All entries must be received by 9pm on July 1st, when the winners will be chosen. Both winners will be notified by email shortly thereafter.

Borders and HarperCollins have teamed up to provide me with a Borders gift card in exchange for my postings about the Double-Dog Dare Summer Reading Challenge. Of course, as always, all opinions are my own.

Junior’s Adventures {Giveaway}

by Christine - From Dates to Diapers on December 23, 2009

juniors_adventures_childrens_books_box_6

Junior’s Adventures Books, by Dave Ramsey, are so much fun and all of my kids enjoy them, especially Josh. Just the other day I found him all snuggled up on the couch, with one book in his hands and the rest of the set scattered around him… so cute! Even my younger two love to browse through and look at the colorful pictures.

My older three, however, have learned a few valuable lessons from Junior’s Adventures; lessons they have actually begun to put in to practice. Lessons about saving money, giving to others, and budgeting – all told in story form, on a level they understand fully.

The complete set of Junior’s Adventures contains the following books ::

· The Super Red Racer (Work)
· Careless at the Carnival (Spending)
· The Big Birthday Surprise (Giving)
· My Fantastic Fieldtrip (Saving)
· A Special Thank You (Integrity)
· Battle of the Chores (Debt)

I have very excited to tell you that today’s giveaway is a set of these fabulous books. Your kiddos will love them!

Here’s what you must do to enter:

  • Leave me a comment, by 12 noon (pst) on December 24th, telling me which of the above books would be the most appropriate lesson for a little person in your life. Does your little guy struggle with spending or have a hard time saving? I’d love to know why you’d like to win this set.

For additional entries, you may:

  • Link to this giveaway on your blog and/or Facebook wall. Be sure you leave me a separate comment for each link.
  • Tweet about this giveaway and include a link, using the hashtag #D2Dgvwy, as many times as you’d like before noon tomorrow, and leave me a separate comment for each tweet.

One winner will be selected at random, and will be emailed. Winner will then have 24 hours to respond before forfeiting their prize.

Play and Learn

by Christine - From Dates to Diapers on December 11, 2009

I have many fond memories of this time of the year, growing up…. With so many family gatherings and school group activities, we were much busier than usual. Because of the hustle and bustle, it seemed we took many days off of school between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Sure, we were still learning, but they were days spent baking, visiting family and friends, shopping and preparing for these special days of celebration.

This is just a fact I now have to embrace as I struggle with trying to get everything done this month – December is a busy month. And just as my Mom made up for our lack of full bookwork-laden school days, I am trying to make up for them with my kids, guilt-free.

I’m happy to say that I’ve been introduced to some great resources for helping to keep my children’s minds active when I may be busy addressing Christmas cards or we’re waiting for the cookies to bake. Instead of making myself feel guilty for the many days in December when the book learning gets pushed aside, I set my kids (yes, even the younger ones) up at the computer, or with some great books, when we’re not busy with Christmas festivities.

Here are some great sites and book series in my arsenal for such days ::

DreamBox.com :: DreamBox Learning K-2 Math is a solid math curriculum wrapped in fun web-based adventures that my kids love. With individually-tailored instructions, my kiddos are learning without even realizing it! Sign your kiddos up for a free trial now and you’ll see what I mean!

OneMoreStory.com :: One More Story is an online library of some fun classic and contemporary children’s literature. The site doesn’t replace “real” books, but it is perfect for times when I’m busy. The great thing about One More Story is that it can be utilized by both pre-readers and early readers, which means it’s perfect for most of my kiddos. Josh and Ben can choose a book, see the illustrations and have the book read to them, while the I Can Read It mode allows Julia to mute the sound, but lets her click on an unfamiliar word to hear that word spoken by the narrator. This site provides a great way for my kiddos to independently explore literature.

BigIQKids.com :: My oldest three kiddos are big fans of Big IQ Kids, as am I. What I like about it is that it supplements our regular lessons perfectly. We happen to be learning about the geography of the United States and at Time 4 Learning they can brush up on their knowledge of the states. In addition to U.S. Geography, Math, and Vocabulary, I can add their spelling words (or use the words already included) for extra practice, so they’re ready for their test at the end of the week. They get in some study time and I get time to get some presents wrapped – Now that’s a win-win!

First Encyclopedia of the Human Body :: The human body is most certainly a fascinating study, and one in which all of my children are quite captivated by. The simple text, stunning photographs, detailed illustrations and fun activities are perfect for my kiddos to explore all on their own, although I’ve also used this book as part of our formal lessons, as well. My kiddos never tire of learning about the wonders of the human body, but the First Encyclopedia of the Human Body certainly adds to their enjoyment.

Junior’s Adventures Books, by Dave Ramsey :: These books are so much fun and all of my kids enjoy them, especially Josh. Just yesterday I found him all snuggled up on the couch, with one book in his hands and the rest of the set scattered around him… so cute! Anyway, my older three have learned a few valuable lessons from Junior’s Adventures; lessons they have actually begun to put in to practice. Lessons about saving money, giving to others, and budgeting – all on a level they understand fully.

Are there any sites or books that you think I should check out? What do you do to keep your kiddos’ brains busy while you are?
