When Christine and I led a short-term mission trip to Zambia, Africa, in 2003 with World Vision, we met an Anglican minister, Rev. Joseph Mumita, from Kenya who was also visiting the country and working with World Vision.
Over the past few years we’ve kept in touch and recently he agreed to take on a pretty outlandish task and climb Mt. Kilimanjaro – the tallest mountain in Africa at 19,340 ft. – to raise money for Mother Mercy Home, an AIDS orphanage just outside of Nairobi. But that’s Rev. Joseph; he’s very giving. He once drove his beat-up car miles out of his way just to connect with an American aid worker who was a friend of a friend of mine, and who was feeling a bit lonely in a strange country.
Rev. Joseph is planning to do the climb in early September (1-6). The German Airline Lufthansa, through one of their community organizations called Human Cargo Care, has agreed to match any funds he can raise, which ideally will be $10,000. The money will go to build dormitories, an administration block, and to build a pharmacy to cater to the children and the local people. All of these things will help increase the capacity of the home by 50% to accommodate 124 children.
Working with a Christian organization called
Mother’s Union, the Anglican Diocese of Mt. St. Kenya South facilitates the orphanage to provide basic needs: food, shelter and education. But most importantly, show them the love of God.

As most of you know, Africa is very dear to our hearts. Ray and I have seen first-hand how our meager offerings can do a world of difference. We ask that you will, at the very least, pray with us for the people of Africa, especially the lonely orphans.
If you can help support our friend, Rev. Joseph, with a tax deductable contribution to our church – Granite Springs Church – we can help him reach his goal to help the AIDS orphans. Please let me know if you feel so led, before August 25th, as the funds are due shortly thereafter.
Thanks for partnering with us to make a difference!

On Friday night we traveled in the steps of a child affected by the AIDS crisis in Africa.
Little Emmanuel lost both of his parents and now he and his brother are all alone. They are mistreated by their aunt, stripped of almost all they own, and are now forced to care for themselves in the wild brush in Uganda. Wild animals, rain, and hunger threaten their survival. But, there is something worse to fear… Emmanuel may have contracted AIDS from his mother’s milk. Has he been infected? Will he survive?
Emmanuel is one of four children you can meet during the World Vision Experience. Kombo, Mathambo and Babirye were also affected by AIDS and are also ready to tell their story in this interactive exhibit that combines stirring audio and captivating photography, transporting you to the heart of Africa.
It’s about children.
It’s about Africa.
It’s a personal journey.
It’s a chance to take action.

Africa has always had a very special place in my heart. For as long as I can remember, I have felt called to pray for the people of Africa and have felt a special pull towards this vast and poverty-stricken nation. As some of you know, Ray and I went to Zambia, Africa in 2003 on a mission trip with World Vision. We were able to meet several children, families and communities who are influenced by and directly benefit from child sponsorship. In fact, we were able to meet two of the six children whom we, as a family, sponsor! It was so exciting to be able to meet these beautiful and precious children and their families, pray with them and just love on them!

Who Is World Vision?
World Vision is a Christian humanitarian organization dedicated to working with children, families and their communities worldwide to reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice.
