Breathe Easy

by Christine - From Dates to Diapers on June 7, 2010

As you may know, my boys and I suffer from extreme allergies, with this time of the year being especially bad. Both of my twins will experience asthma attacks after spending an afternoon outside, so I tend to be very concerned with ensuring we have clean air filters in our home, vacuum daily, and keep the windows closed (which kills me during those pre-summer cool, breezy days), among many other precautionary actions.

Apparently contaminants like pollen, dust, mold spores, tobacco smoke, soot, smog, mildew, pet dander, and fungus can be six times more concentrated in a car than outside the vehicle.* Yuck!

Cabin air filters come in two main types: the panel style, as used on most fuel-injected cars, and the radial style, which are usually used on carbureted vehicles. In addition to reducing allergens and dangerous air pollutants, the air filter traps dirt particles, which can cause damage to engine cylinders, walls, pistons and piston rings. Not only that, but changing your cabin air filters on a regular basis can have a significant impact on engine life and performance. Sounds like a win-win to me.

I will definitely be looking into this. I have bad seasonal allergies (during every season, sadly) and have an air purifier in our home. I hadn’t thought about the necessity of having one in the car. Thanks for the info!
