Even though most of my older kiddos love to read, now that summer is here and all of the neighbor kids are knocking on our door, I’m having a tough time getting them to sit still with a book. Even my younger tykes would rather be running around outside or playing on their new park than sitting with me to listen to a story.
Well, I’ve teamed up with Borders this month to bring you tips on encouraging your young’ens to read. Maybe these tips will help me and my kiddos, too.
HarperCollins and Jon Scieszka, author of Robot Zot and Knucklehead: Tall Tales and Almost True Stories of Growing up Scieszka, have provided this week’s tip::
“If you want to inspire your boy reader, expand your definition of reading to include non-fiction, graphic novels, funny books, wordless books, audio books and magazines. Summer reading is a great time to explore texts that aren’t covered/allowed in school reading.”
To further foster a love of reading in your offspring this summer, Borders is hosting the Double-Dog Dare Summer Reading Challenge in stores across the country through the end of August. To participate, kids up to age 12 can read any 10 books they want, list them on a special form, and return the form to Borders for a free book!

To give you and your kiddos a jump start on the dare, Borders is offering my friends a chance to win one of two (2) $100 Borders gift cards!
There are three ways to enter, but you must leave a separate comment for each entry to count:
- What are your own tips for getting kids to read?
- Tell me about your favorite book as a child.
- Tweet the following -Encourage your kids to read w/ @Border’s Double-Dog Dare Summer Reading Challenge & enter to win 1 of 2 $100 gift cards http://bit.ly/afROVL
All entries must be received by 9pm on July 1st, when the winners will be chosen. Both winners will be notified by email shortly thereafter.
Borders and HarperCollins have teamed up to provide me with a Borders gift card in exchange for my postings about the Double-Dog Dare Summer Reading Challenge. Of course, as always, all opinions are my own.

“What are your own tips for getting kids to read?” Create an incentive program for them! My BFF gets her charges to read by giving them stickers for every 15 minutes of reading. If they collect enough stickers they win a prize! She also uses this as positive reinforcement for other good behaviors.

I think the best way to get kids to read is by example! Have family reading time where everone reads together. Allow them to have their own little reading space and choose their own books.

My tips for getting children to read is to take them to the library, take them to the bookstore and make sure they see you reading frequently.
I let them choose the book and make it a ritual right after bed time-it gives them some quality time to look forward to to know they don’t have to go to bed right away

I think kids learn by example, so I’d encourage them to read by reading to them while they are too young to do it themselves, and also let them see me reading and enjoying books.
Our library has a summer reading program for kids. This year they added a summer reading program for adults too! What a great family activity that would be – all signing up for the program, and then making trips to the library to get books for everyone!
Thanks for the giveaway!
Dr. Seuss’s Green Eggs & Ham was always one of my favorites, so was Wanda Gag’s Millions of Cats!
Thanks for the giveaway!
I encourage my children to read by making reading a normal part of our day just like playing or eating.
My favorite book as a child was “Goodnight Moon”.
Reading is a daily part of our lives. However, it is sometimes difficult to encourage that reading when their friends are doing something else. So we use a chart that gives them “credit” when they complete a book – they have to answer some questions I have created about the book in order to make sure they really read it. When they get 10 points, then they get to have a prize (from having a family meal out, trip to chucky cheese with a few tokens or something that they enjoy as the needed incentive).
I take my kids to the library once a week where they can pick out books and they have a reading program to reward children for reading books.

I think the best way to encourage a child to read is to read to them regularly, especially a book with a little suspense so they really look forward to hearing what happens

To get kids interested in reading, read to them a lot when they’re young.

As a child my favorite book was War of the Worlds (as odd as that may sound)
To get kids to read, let them choose what they want to read, even if it’s magazines.
