Battling Winter Cold and Flu Season with Essential Oils

by Christine - From Dates to Diapers on December 4, 2013

It’s that time of the year again when my Facebook stream is flooded with pictures of friends doing fun things with their kiddos for the holidays, Christmas decorations, stories of finding the perfect tree, and… posts about being sick. Seems that just about everyone is either under the weather or coming down with something yucky that is going around.

We’ve had our fair share of the sniffles and tummy bugs in years past, but this year I’ve stocked up on some ammo to fight against the cold and flu. We’ve had a few close calls, after being exposed to sickies, but by building our immune systems we’re fighting off the germs.

Battling the Cold and Flu

Before this cold and flu season, I would get sick by just looking at someone with a contagious virus. Heck, my little carrier monkeys brought all sorts of stuff home from school getting me sick every time, but very rairly ever getting sick themselves. My immune system was just depleted.

I recently shared about how I began oil pulling when I had a tooth and sinus infection. I firmly believe that doing so every day has helped reboot and rebuild my immune system. In addition to oil pulling every morning, I’ve begun using Young Living Essential Oils.

Essential oils are the aromatic liquids found within shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes, resins, and seeds. Young Living’s dedication to quality ensures that they provide pure, therapeutic-grade oils with the complete, optimal blend of plant chemicals to ensure maximum potency and results.

What do you to with them?

To start, I have begun adding essential oils to the water that I drink. There are three oils I use to infuse my water – Lemon, Peppermint, and a blend called Thieves. (I don’t mix the three oils in my water, although I suppose you could.)

Why these three oils?

  • Lemon boosts the body’s natural defense and restores the body’s optimal alkaline levels.
  • Peppermint promotes healthy respiratory function.
  • Thieves defends and protects the body.

Infuse your water

Because my kiddos drink tons of water all throughout the day, and most are at school a good part of the day, it’s fairly difficult to get them all to drink oil infused water. To defend and protect their little bodies on a daily basis, I rub each of the three above-mentioned oils on the bottoms of my little guys’s feet.

If we feel a bug coming on, or one of my kiddos is acting a little off, I’ll double up on the Thieves. We also use Thieves Hand Sanitizer, and I carry the Thieves Spray with me everywhere we go. Defend and protect, baby!

Our Diffuser is constantly going right now, releasing essential oils in to the air. I most often have Thieves diffussing throughout the day, but I’m finding that I am adding Purification more often than not. RC and Raven are diffussing in the evenings, if one of us feels like we have a bit of chest congestion.

We already know Thieves defends and protects, but why use Purification, RC, and Raven?

  • Purification protects against pathogens, cleans the air, and neutralizes odors.
  • RC and Raven both support a healthy respiratory system.

Diffusing Combos while sick

In the rare case that we do start to have full blown cold or flu symptoms, I’m well prepared! Instead of reaching for the Advil, I reach for the PanAway & Deep Relief oil blends for aches and pains.

  • PanAway makes a perfect massage oil, mixed with Coconut Oil, to soothe achy muscles
  • Deep Relief is great to roll on a stiff neck or stuffy head

No Children’s Motrin can be found around here any more. Instead I’ve seen Peppermint and Lemon work quickly to reduce a fever. In fact, just last week little Timmy had a low-grade fever, so I pulled out my oils, and lathered him up!

How?

  • I rubbed Peppermint and Lemon, alternately on his spine and feet, every 20 min. It only took about an hour before his body temperature was back to normal!

Fever reducer & Pain reliever

What about tummy aches?

  • DiGize promotes healthy digestion and soothes stomach discomforts.
  • Peppermint also helps with stomach issues.

And for that pesky sore throat or unproductive cough?

  • RC or Raven can be mixed with a carrier oil and applied topically to the chest and throat to bring sweet relief. (It even helped Grandpa’s bronchitus to clear up!)

I could probably go on and on, but I won’t. Most of the above oils are included in the Everyday Oils Kit (Deep Relief, RC, Raven, and DiGize excluded), along with five others. I’d love to talk to you about how you can get your hands on this priceless ammo to battle against winter cold and flu season!

I’ve heard about some of the wonderful things essential oils can do but I feel so overwhelmed just thinking about delving into this whole new world. I even heard it might help my plantar fasciitis. How did you start and where did you get your info? You’re inspiring!! :-)

I was so overwhelmed at first, too, Jo-Lynne. I was added to a wonderful FB group full of very knowledgable ladies, found a couple of books and YL testimonial sites, and decided to research only one thing at a time. I used to know more about this. I believe in the effectiveness of essential oils and I need to start reading up on them again. I just got over a crazy sinus infection, and I need to do all I can to up my immune system. I even have a local contact that is a distributor for Young Living.

How many drops of lemon, peppermint or thieves do you put in your water?

Just a couple. No more than 3 in an 8oz glass. Be sure you use a GLASS when infusing with citrus oils.
