Baby Smells (A Giveaway!)

by Christine - From Dates to Diapers on September 18, 2008

Now, we all know what is inside the diaper, but where do you put the stinky ones? With my older three kiddos, I just had a garbage pail in our garage where I would dispose of diapers. I had heard that the disposal systems didn’t really help in eliminating the powerful smells of a dirty diaper, so I didn’t bother.

I did receive an original Diaper Genie as a gift when I had Josh, but it wasn’t worth keeping after I had Ben, so I was super excited to try the new Diaper Genie II Elite… It is incredibly easy to use and the Ultra-Fresh antimicrobial, built into the plastic, really does inhibit odor-causing bacteria. I don’t know about you, but that stinky diaper smell is not on my list of favorite scents!

Did you know…?

The ability to smell is well developed before an infant is born. It is an important sense that is needed for survival, and it plays an instrumental role in bonding to parents. Developing preferences and aversions to smells is a journey for infants and children that takes place over the early years of life and involves many exciting discoveries.

Visit BabySmells.com to learn about the new product and find out more about how babies associate smells, watch weekly webisodes, order free decorative decals for Diaper Genie pails and enter the ‘Smelly Tales’ contest with a chance to win $5,000.00. I have a great story that I am planning to enter!

Enter to win a Diaper Genie II Elite!

Here’s what you have to do:

  • Share one of your smelly tales with me here in the comments, before 9pm (pacific) on October 10th.
  • For an extra entry in the random drawing, feel free to subscribe to my blog feed. You must remain a subscriber at least through the duration of this contest to qualify for a second entry. Make sure you leave me a separate comment saying you subscribed.
  • A lucky commenter, chosen at random, will win the Diaper Genie II Elite. The winner will be notified via email, so make sure you leave a valid email address in your comment.

Oh my I have so many stinky smell stories I couldn’t possibly be choose. The most recent would have to be when my Mother came to visit. Being around ‘diaper smell’ I’ve become kind of immune to it so when my Mom came to visit she ever so kindly informed me of the ‘poopy diapers’ that were in the trash can. Yah. Kind of embarassing haha!

I have a smelly story that happened just recently. For about a week, every time my husband or I got home from work we noticed a bad smell in the house. We hunted and hunted for the source of the stench, but we couldn’t find it. I started worrying we were just stinky people! My husband blamed the trash can in the nursery. I blamed our plumbing. Last night we finally hunted down the source of the nastiness! There was a bag of rotten potatoes in the bottom of my kitchen pantry! EEEEEEEW!!!

So even though it wasn’t the diapers after all, I’d still love to have a Diaper Genie for my three month old’s diapers.

My funny story isn’t actually mine own, but my MIL’s. She left my DH alone with his Daddy for the first time and went to the grocery store. She returned to find my husband in his crib with poop everywhere and his Father on the floor gagging in disgust. LOL! He never changed another dirty diaper in his life!

With endless amounts of poop at our house I am forever trying to get rid of that smell (I have an 18 month old champion pooper)! I’m not sure why but every so often he has these little hard poops (great no mess, only 1 wipe!) but the worst part is they smell like horse poop…fresh, straigh off the farm, horse poop! I have yet to figure it out!

I could really use a diaper pail that works! My smelly tale: My current diaper pail smells so bad I have to tie the poo diapers in scented diaper sacks just to throw them in the pail. Then, I spray it down with Lysol and change the bag constantly. Even so, my family is begging me to give up the diaper pail and throw the diapers in the garbage can outside. :/

Thanks for the chance! The email is rstaley33 (at) gmail (dot) com

I will subscribe! My daughter is pregnant with her first, her hubby is an only child and has never changed a smelly diaper yet, much less even held a baby before! This will be fun to watch! She’d love this, and it will help really naive new daddy to cope with all the smells that come along with baby! Suzie purrpage3@verizon.net

My son’s diapers are so smelly, I can always tell if he’s pooped as soon as I open the door to his bedroom!

I have a horrible one. My friend recently accidentally threw a poopy diaper into her laundry bin. It was a HORRENDOUS mess when she was doing laundry! yikes.

The other day one of our 14 month old twins decided to poop in the bath tub – a first. Yuck! our diaper dekor is past its prime already after 14 months of 2 little ones with dirty pants.

We have a different diaper pail and it’s just not doing the trick. No matter what the smell just seeps out and my daughter’s room always stinks. We were recently at my in-laws and after bringing my daughter out after her nap, my MIL had to open the window to air out the room because of how bad it was in there!

I don’t think my daughter’s diapers smell all that bad YET (I’ve been told that that changes when they start eating food). I know I’m going to want to be getting one of these soon, though, because she’s been introduced to her first solid foods in the last month – banana and rice pudding.

(And yes, I did experience being pooped on WHILE I was changing her diaper, lol)

Thanks for this giveaway!

My smelly tell which I’m not happy to relive…..I had always heard of this happening but NEVER thought it would be MY kid. Well…a week ago my daughter is taking her afternoon nap. She gets up and calls for me as usual and I open the door. Her face, the crib, the wall…all covered in what appears to be chocolate, so I proceed to laugh wondering how she got chocolate in her room and yell at my husband to grab the camera. He comes running in and as we approach the crib…the smell of chocolate is not was smacked me in the face….it was POOP. She dug in her diaper and painted the room. I go running, gagging along the way and left my poor husband to do cleanup.

We where out shopping one day and I had changed my daughters diaper in the car and sat the dirty diaper in the floor board. Well I guess I forgot to throw it away because next day I got in the Hot car and about lost my lunch.

Too many stinky tales to pick just one. But we did have a (kind of) funny one last night actually. While visiting my in-laws, my husband changed our daughter’s dirty diaper, but apparently the diaper contents got loose (?) onto her foot. Gross, right? My husband didn’t realize it until she had trekked all around my in-laws family room, leaving her mark as she walked. Thankfully the mess cleaned up just fine but it was pretty gross.

Ewwww! :) I just walked into my house yesterday after running errands and having left the house right after changing a MAJOR dirty diaper! WHOA! The smell was enough to knock me off my feet! I had dumped the diaper in the kitchen trash, and apparently, even though it was wrapped up tightly, it decided to spread its stink all over the house. Ick. I could really use a Diaper Genie II!!!

These stories are great!

My hubby was watching our 8 month-old while I fixed dinner the other night. DH walked into the kitchen and said, “Either he (our son) made the worst poopy diaper of his life, or it just smells THAT bad.” I wasn’t too concerned until DH says, “Oh my goodness, it’s running down his leg!”

It was by far the WORST diaper I had ever seen and smelled… and that includes all babies, not just my son. It’s funny now, but I don’t think even a Diaper Genie II Elite could have covered up that smell! =)

Well, this one doesn’t pertain to my kids but just last month my 1 month old nephew was getting baptized and early on in the service he let out a huge grunt and filled his diaper. You could hear it through the whole church. Snicker, snicker. Couldn’t change it right away because, well, baptism time was coming up. Pretty stinky. Not sure where that one ended up. As far as I know, no Diaper Genie in church!

Well, just the other day, my husband discovered that one of us had not tied the bottom of our diaper genie, so when he opened it the new baby’s diapers went all over the floor! Luckily, they’re just breastmilk poo!

One time when my husband changed our son’s poppy diaper and left the lid to our generic diaper pail open. It stayed open all day and we got home to the smell of poppy thru out the house.

We had the original Diaper Genie and I wasn’t impressed. I’m interested to give this one a try! Most of the smelliness around our house revolves around my toddler. He’s mostly potty trained but there are some times when he has smelly accidents in his pants. Yuck! It’s not easy to get rid of that smell.

I think its so crazy how after just a few weeks of changing my newborns diapers that I no longer notice the smell. My three sons on the other hand practically puke at the smell.

Somehow a smelly diaper got mixed in with the laundry and ended up in the washing machine. I had to rewash the clothes 3 times to get all of the little pieces of diaper off of them!

A funny stinky story.. This past Saturday evening, was my 10 year high school class reunion… We took DS#2 with us being he is only 8 weeks old… I had him a moby wrap on myself… We had just arrived, and I was talking to a long lost friend of mine, when I smelled the stink… I thought to myself, Oh my that cant be coming from my baby… It was almost like one of those “farts” that you walk through, was only in one area…. So I asked DH who was there to smell baby… Looked funny cause baby was attached me to, so from a distance probably looked like DH was sniffing my belly LOL… He said nothing smells… Ok whatever… So we get into the banquet room, and I’m overwelmed with stink again… YES this baby has pooped honey… I can smell it.. Sure enough once I got to the rest room (with NO changing table) there was a nice stinky… It was funny to be known as the stinky one in the class reunion this past weekend LOL..

One day, my son awoke from his nap earlier than normal. I heard him talking on monitor. I was in the middle of something so I took a little bit to go into his room. When I went in, there was poop in his sheets. Interesting enough, it was not on him. His diaper slid open and I guess it just plopped out. Needless to say, what a suprise to mommy. kroberts81@hotmail.com

Well, my funny story involves pee instead of stinky but when my son was born, the first thing he did before I had even seen him was pee all over. I saw an arc of pee before I ever saw any of him.

We went to El Torito Grill last week and my little boy (15 months) ate some of the food we were eating. I don’t think beans and babies go together. He had a massive blowout. We were way beyond wipes. I had to take him into the bath to get him clean.
