Mission: My Bedroom Entry

Tackle It Tuesday Meme

I've been trying to tackle all of those wonderful bloggy giveaways everyone seems to be hosting, but I still had Christmas shtuff in the entry way of my bedroom, even after five weeks. Whaaaat!?!? I've been a little busy!

I finally decided to My hubby asked me, ever so kindly, if I could package up the last of my Christmas gifts and mail them (horrible, I know!), then clean up that mess.

What a mess it was....

Mom of the Week - Melissa

Monday, January 28, 2008

Photobucket - Video and Image HostingI am honored that my good friend, Melissa, has agreed to be my very first Mom of the Week. Such a blessing and inspiration to me and so many others, she so deserves the spotlight.

After knowing such a wonderful person for so long, it was hard to come up with questions that can highlight what I admire about her.... Here you will see just a small glimpse of why I love her so.

Me: Have you always wanted to be a mommy?
Melissa: Yes, being a wife and mommy is what I always wanted - though I never realized all it entailed! I have to say that I can't think of anything else which tends more toward a woman's sanctification than being married and raising littles ones!

You are the wife of a police officer, mother of five beautiful girls, you are the keeper of your home AND you home school... What is your secret for time management?

I tend to be a very routine oriented person - and my girls just thrive on a faithful routine. While we are always open to God changing our plan for the day I find that our days are much more peaceful when I keep the girls on a fairly steady routine.
I love the book Managers Of Their Homes! It helped me to create a schedule for our day, which simply shows me how much I can do in a day. I rarely follow the schedule, but as I didn't come from a large family, the book has been somewhat of a mentor (so many wonderful mothers posted their daily schedules for us to learn from!)
I also find that remembering this is a season helps me not to try to do too much that I simply don't have time for - and to be content with that. I am blessed with a wonderful husband, without whom I couldn't do any of this! And I read aloud a lot - simple, yet it gives me and the girls snuggle time, restful time and learning time together.

I love answering the most common question for moms with lots of little ones - "How do you do it?" I'd love to hear how YOU do it.
I think I've realized over the years that God gives us the grace to do the task He's given us NOW - not the one we might someday have. When I had one and two children, my days were pretty full. There were times I wondered how I would do it with more. Now that I have five little ones, my days are still full, but as He's given us each new child, He's allowed it to "feel normal" to have that many children. Aside from those occasional "pull out my hair" days, I don't feel overwhelmed by my task, but I also try not to imagine how another mom does it with a different/harder task. I realize that God has given each of us the grace for OUR situation, not someone else's.

You have all girls, one of whom you adopted from Africa. Are you planning on having more, maybe try for a boy?
We LOVE having girls. We definitely hope to have more little ones, but not to "try for a boy" - simply to welcome all the children God desires to give us. We'd be thrilled to have ten girls!

If you could choose only two books to read to your girls, what would they be, and why?
Oh, this question is too hard, but I'll take a stab at it. I'd have to choose the Bible and The Narnia series (I know, it's not one book!) The Bible, of course, is what we live by, love and desire to learn more about, so we could never be without it. The Narnia series, of all our books is one we keep coming back to. It so beautifully "tells the true story", and I've yet to meet a fiction series that's made me love God more, or created such enjoyable times while reading! But that doesn't even count all of our "little one" books!

As the mommy of so many myself, I know it's hard to find "me" time. If you had one whole day to yourself how would you spend it?
Hmmm, I think ride a horse for a few hours, take a bubble bath and read.

You know I hate doing laundry... Do you have any tips for me?
Try to make a habit of doing it every day (at least, unless you prefer one huge laundry day) - I just do one or two loads so it never builds up. The only day I try not to do it (barring any exploded diapers) is Sunday, but other than that I do it daily. Oh, and every other week I've started trying to wash one bed's sheets each day, so I don't get overwhelmed trying to do them all at once. Course, if we lived near each other, I think I'd happily do your laundry if you'd like to do my deep cleaning!

Thank you so much, Melissa, for taking the time to visit with us! How can we pray for you this week?
My biggest prayer is that I would not only do my job well, outwardly, but that I would DELIGHT in it. I so long to delight daily in God, delight in my husband, and delight in and enjoy my girls. Sometimes I struggle with going through things by rote, yet not in God's abundant joy. Please pray that I would love Him above all else, that I might be able to rightly love my family!

Yet Another Benefit of Breastfeeding

Friday, January 25, 2008

I am currently nursing my sixth baby. Well, not technically. My twins were born 9 weeks early and were actually bottle-fed. But, they did consume only breast milk for the first year of their lives.... My body worked around the clock to make sure they had all the nutrients and benefits that only my milk could give them. So, I guess that counts.

In addition to the convenience and money-saving perks (imagine the money I've saved by breast-feeding all six of my babies!), I have a special bond with each of my children because of the milk exchange between us. Not only did their immune systems benefit, but I am also the more healthy because of it - Studies show that I have a lower risk of breast and ovarian cancer, simply due to the fact that I have already spent 4 1/2 years of my life with babies attached to my breasts. Not to mention I have returned to my pre-pregnancy size just after a few short months - Another perk attributed to exclusively breast-feeding.

I used to put a whole lot of stock in breastfeeding as a form of birth control natural spacing, but now I'm really not so sure. With my first 4 kiddos (5 if you count each of the twins) I did not begin ovulating until my breastfeeding baby was 9 months old - Makes sense since that was about the time baby didn't seem quite so interested in me because he was sleeping through the night, and eating lots of table foods. HOWEVER, I'm a bit leery this time around... Baby Noah, at 5 months, is already so big AND he's sleeping through the night. I don't really feel like I can trust what has happened before, and I'm afraid I will be re-acquainted with my monthly friend. I guess I'll just be a bit more careful than I was when any of my other babies were only 5 months old, if you know what I mean.

Now, according to a new study, breastfed babies whose mothers eat fruits and vegetables are more inclined to like those foods themselves. Now, that explains why my kids like broccoli! Really though, it makes sense, if you think about it... Food flavors transfer to baby through our milk, much the same way they travel through the amniotic fluid. I wonder if my kids love for chocolate was born the day they were conceived?

So, my once perky breasts are on their way to my knees, but that's okay. It's okay because my kiddos adore me, they're all incredibly healthy, I think they're pretty smart, there is an even space between them all, AND they love their veggies!

Tackle It Tuesday Meme

I mentioned before that I am on a mission to get stuff in my house organized. So far, I think I'm doin' pretty good.

Yesterday I decided to tackle my laundry room. This was a room that had been neglected for quite some time, and what a mess it was! I'm sure you know what I mean... Laundry everywhere, empty detergent containers on the counter, garbage on the floor, soap scum on the washer - Need I go on?

I didn't snap shots of what it looked like before, but do you want to see what my laundry room looks like now?

Mom of the Week

Monday, January 21, 2008

I'm sure most of you would agree that work and stay at home moms do not get the attention and encouragement that they so deserve.

Enter my new weekly feature...

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Every Monday, beginning next week, I will choose a stay-at-home mom or a mom who works from home, who I will interview and put in the spotlight - Incredible moms who don't get much more praise and recognition than the slobbery kisses and sticky hugs from their little ones. Now, I'll be the first to say that that is certainly not a bad thing -- I love those moments of sheer adoration as much as any mom! However, these moms deserve a chance to shine beyond the dirty walls of their sticky floored home, and be encouraged by all fellow moms.

In addition to the attention they will receive here by you, the featured mom will be awarded a button to proudly display on their blog or web site linking to their special time in the spotlight. How cool is that?

Here are ways that you can participate:

1) You will have the opportunity to leave the featured work or stay-at home mom words of encouragement, funny quotes, or tips to help her navigate her way through mounds of dishes and loads of laundry. This will be a great way to cheer these moms on. All comments left on the Mom of the Week post will be emailed to the featured mom at the end of the week.

2) Do you know an incredible mom who deserves the spotlight? Or, perhaps would you like some encouragement yourself? If you answered yes to either of those questions, please email me with your nominee, at fromdatestodiapers@yahoo.com with Mom of the Week as the subject.

3) Help spread the word. Grab my button, from the box below, and place it on your sidebar, write a post about my new feature, or email your friends to share this fun new way for moms to encourage each other. Please let me know if you decide to link up to help spread the word!

I am looking forward to this fun new way to meet and encourage moms from all over blogland!!

I'm Trying...

I'm on a mission to get my house organized. It won't be easy, but if I tackle one thing at a time, I just may be able to do it. Or, so I hope!

Since Baby Noah will soon be on the move, I decided it would be best to start on trying to find some way to keep the Magnetix, Legos and K'nex off the floor, since strangling my boys is not an option! You know, my twins got at least one set of each to add to their ever-growing collections.... That means way more little pieces to attempt to keep out of Noah's reach.

I'm still in the research stage, but so far I have found some incredible ways to keep these little pieces organized.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
This Acrylic Organizer Tower has ten drawers and sells for $27.99 at Organize-It. A major downside to this type of storage is the height - I'm just afraid that, left to rowdy boys, it would be knocked over way too much, thus eliminating it's usefulness.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
I found this Box 4 Blocks... It really is quite incredible -- It has three storage levels, each with different sized grids so pieces fall into the various trays and stay organized. It was the winner of the prestigious "Organizers Choice Award" for "Best New Home Organizing Product" at NAPO National Conference and Expo. It sells for $27.70 at box4blocks.com. This one looks pretty neat!

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Then, of course, we have the good ol' Lego Storage Tray Unit. It's wooden frame looks like it would hold up well, and it has four plastic storage trays. It's even on sale right now for only $19.98!! Looks like I may be ordering a few of these, like now!

Any other ideas for keeping small toys organized and stored??? How do YOU keep all of the Legos, Magnetix and K'nex off the floor at your house???

CONGRATULATIONS!!

This is what Jodi said about Capessa…

The Capessa site looks very interesting. I have it bookmarked and will be back to join. I can so relate to the mom in the video, I had a few meltdowns when my boys were babies. So glad there are lots of different support groups/friends for young moms these days.

Fold the small things first, like socks, and the large things, like towels, last. That way, you don't have any small clothes hidden in the folds of the larger ones!

A big thanks to everyone who entered, and especially to those of you who offered your secrets on keeping up with the laundry. Here were some of my favorites:

BlondeMomBlog (Jamie) said…
I try to keep on it daily. I just take a break on Sundays, and try to on Saturdays, but typically I do a load a day. I also try to immediately fold it and put it away. Otherwise it starts to drift through the house and collect on any clean surface. ;)

If only I could fold it as soon as it comes out of the dryer... hmmm.

moushka said…
The best way to get laundry done is to get the children to help. As soon as a child can walk they can learn how to hand you clothes to put in the washing machine and dryer. Give them lots of praise and you will always get help.

My kiddos definitely help as much as they are capable... We sort, fold, hang up, and put away together.

lace said…
Teach your kids to do their own laundry if they are old enough. And then assign everyone a day that they do laundry.

Oh, they will so be doing their own laundry the day they are tall enough!

And, these last two made me laugh out loud!

I have no idea...I find myself wishing for the Roomba version of a clothes washer and dryer pretty much every day...

My only tip is get an outdoor laundry room so you can avoid the laundry as long as possible like i do!

7 Weird Things About Me - A Meme

Friday, January 18, 2008

Amanda has tagged me with this meme, and I've decided to go ahead and play along. I have to link to the person who tagged me, list 7 weird things about myself, and then tag 7 others to play along.

Here ya go:

1. I will be thrilled if the Lord blesses us with more children.

2. Milk chocolate is super yummy, but I don't like dark chocolate.

3. I enjoy baking, but I don't really like to cook.

4. When I'm stressed out, I bite my bottom lip.

5. I check my email way too much throughout the day. Oh, come on... I know you do, too. That's okay, we can be weird together!

6. Even though I need a break every now and then, I really do love being with my kiddos all day. Now, I don't think this is so weird, but I've been told it is.

7. In addition to falling out in clumps, my hair has changed after every baby. From thick and curly to straight to wavy to straight (again) to wavy (again) and now it's straight (again)!

So, there you have it... I'm proof that you can find weird things about hip mamas, too!

I would be happy to hear 7 weird things about YOU. Let me know if you play along.

I need PageRank help!

I have never really put much stock in PageRanks. Quite honestly, I still don't know what they are all about. But, I have a question, and I am hoping one of you out there in Blogland can help me...

I'm sure you noticed by now that my URL has changed. Yup, my wonderful husband decided that it would be easier for people to find me at www.fromdatestodiapers.com instead http://ooohpickme.....yada, yada. Anyone who types in my old address will be re-directed (unknowingly) to my new URL.

Anyway, have you also noticed that my little icon down on my right sidebar, that is supposed to show my PageRank, says it's at 0? Well, fromdatestodiapers.com does have a pagerank of 0 (I know, surprising, huh? LOL). HOWEVER, I discovered today that my blogspot address - you know, ooohpickpickme.blogspot.com - has a pagerank of 4! (It shows up on that little icon every time I view a post from my blogger account.)

Does anyone know how to get my little ranker to pick up the rank on the old address, so it will show up on the little icon down there? I would greatly appreciate your help! :)

It's Time for Another Goody Swap!!

Wednesday, January 16, 2008

Kailani is hosting her 2nd Valentine's Day Goody Swap and I just had to join in! I so enjoy putting little packages together for my friends, and I love getting stuff in the mail, especially when it is something special, just for me. I know, who doesn't?

You can join in on the fun, too. You have until January 31st to sign up for this fun swap. So, go visit Kailani and sign the Mr. Linky. Kailani will choose our swap partners, and let us know who they are. We are responsible for getting to know our partner, as well as obtaining their mailing info. My favorite part is shopping for my swap partner - As I mentioned before, I love to find (and sometimes create) lots of little goodies for my new blogging buddy. Packages must be sent out so that the recipient receives it on or before Valentine's Day. Make sure you can make this happen before you decide to play along!

Kailani has created a mini Questionare to help with the "getting to know you" part of becoming buddies. Here are my answers to her questions:
  • What is your idea of a romantic Valentine’s Day?
    • I would love to do fun little crafts with my kids on Valentine's Day - I am so not a craftsy person! Come evening, it would be wonderful to have a romantic evening out, with my husband, sans kids... A quiet dinner, long conversation over dessert and coffee, maybe catch a movie - a sappy romantic comedy, of course.
  • In reality, what is your Valentine’s Day really like?
    • No crafts, but we usually make some scrumptious treat together (I may not be craftsy, but I LOVE to bake and create yummy things to eat!) A loud dinner with the kids, no meaningful conversation, no movie - Just a regular night, really.... No complaints!
  • If you could have a lifetime supply of your favorite sweet indulgence, what would it be?
    • Oh my, this is hard! I have a major sweet tooth, so I pretty much like it all!
  • Is there any sweet treat you absolutely do not like?
    • Not a big fan of dark chocolate (I know, I'm weird!), or anything with nuts.
  • If you fell into a pool of chocolate, how would you get out?
    • As long as it was milk chocolate I wouldn't want to get out!

Home Alone

Tuesday, January 15, 2008

Laura posted this on her blog yesterday. I think it is so important to share this story with our young friends who so freely give out information to online "friends" without a second thought. PLEASE pass this on.

*******************

After tossing her books on the sofa, she decided to grab a snack and get on-line. She logged on under her screen name ByAngel213. She checked her Buddy List and saw GoTo123 was on. She sent him an instant message:

ByAngel213:
Hi. I'm glad you are on! I thought someone was following me home today. It was really weird!

GoTo123:
LOL You watch too much TV. Why would someone be following you?
Don't you live in a safe neighborhood?

ByAngel213:
Of course I do. LOL I guess it was my imagination cuz' I didn't see anybody when I looked out.

GoTo123:
Unless you gave your name out on-line. You haven't done that have you?

ByAngel213:
Of course not. I'm not stupid you know.

GoTo123:
Did you have a softball game after school today?

ByAngel213:
Yes and we won!!

GoTo123:
That's great! Who did you play?

ByAngel213:
We played the Hornets. LOL. Their uniforms are so gross! They look like bees. LOL

GoTo123:
What is your team called?

ByAngel213:
We are the Canton Cats. We have tiger paws on our uniforms. They are really cool.

GoTo1 23:
Did you pitch?

ByAngel213:
No I play second base. I got to go. My homework has to be done before my parents get home. I don't want them mad at me. Bye!

GoTo123:
Catch you later. Bye

Meanwhile.......GoTo123 went to the member menu and began to search for her profile. When it came up, he highlighted it and printed it out. He took out a pen and began to write down what he knew about Angel so far.

Her name: Shannon
Birthday: Jan. 3, 1985
Age: 13
State where she lived: North Carolina

Hobbies: softball, chorus, skating and going to the mall. Besides this information, he knew she lived in Canton because she had just told him. He knew she stayed by herself until 6:30 p.m. every afternoon until her parents came home from work. He knew she played softball on Thursday afternoons on the school team, and the team was named the Canton Cats. Her favorite number 7 was printed on her jersey. He knew she was in the eighth grade at the Canton Junior High School . She had told him all this in the conversations they had on- line. He had enough information to find her now.

Shannon didn't tell her parents about the incident on the way home from the ballpark that day. She didn't want them to make a scene and stop her from walking home from the softball games. Parents were always overreacting and hers were the worst. It made her wish she was not an only child. Maybe if she had brothers and sisters, her parents wouldn't be so overprotective.

By Thursday, Shannon had forgotten about the footsteps following her.
Her game was in full swing when suddenly she felt someone staring at her. It was then that the memory came back. She glanced up from her second base position to see a man watching her closely.

He was leaning against the fence behind first base and he smiled when she looked at him. He didn't look scary and she quickly dismissed the sudden fear she had felt.

After the game, he sat on a bleacher while she talked to the coach. She noticed his smile once again as she walked past him. He nodded and she smiled back. He noticed her name on the back of her shirt. He knew he had found her.

Quietly, he walked a safe distance behind her. It was only a few blocks to Shannon's home, and once he saw where she lived he quickly returned to the park to get his car.

Now he had to wait. He decided to get a bite to eat until the time came to go to Shannon 's house. He drove to a fast food restaurant and sat there until time to make his move.

Shannon was in her room later that evening when she heard voices in the living room.

"Shannon, come here," her father called. He sounded upset and she couldn't imagine why. She went into the room to see the man from the ballpark sitting on the sofa.

"Sit down," her father began, "this man has just told us a most interesting story about you."

Shannon sat back. How could he tell her parents anything? She had never seen him before today!

"Do you know who I am, Shannon ?" the man asked.

"No," Shannon answered.

"I am a police officer and your online friend, GoTo123."

Shannon was stunned. "That's impossible! GoTo is a kid my age! He's 14. And he lives in Michigan !"

The man smiled. "I know I told you all that, but it wasn't true. You see, Shannon , there are people on-line who pretend to be kids; I was one of them. But while others do it to injure kids and hurt them, I belong to a group of parents who do it to protect kids from predators. I came here to find you to teach you how dangerous it is to talk to people on-line. You told me enough about yourself to make it easy for me to find you. You named the school you went to, the name of your ball team and the position you played. The number and name on your jersey just made finding you a breeze."

Shannon was stunned. "You mean you don't live in Michigan ?"

He laughed. "No, I live in Raleigh . It made you feel safe to think I was so far away, didn't it?"

She nodded.

"I had a friend whose daughter was like you. Only she wasn't as lucky. The guy found her and murdered her while she was home alone. Kids are taught not to tell anyone when they are alone, yet they do it all the time on-line. The wrong people trick you into giving out information a little here and there on-line. Before you know it, you have told them
