The kiddos love costumes!

by Christine - From Dates to Diapers on August 31, 2008

We don’t dress up for Halloween, but our kiddos love to pretend to be their favorite characters. Up until recently, though, it was always hard for me to find fun kids costumes, at affordable prices, unless it was October. You see, we like to have costume parties to celebrate birthdays, and I’m no seamstress.

Since Ethan and Zach’s birthday is close to Halloween, the year they turned 4 they received some pretty elaborate Spiderman costumes that they wore all the time. In fact, they would even sleep in them. I’ve even been known to wear my wedding dress to transform into a princess with Miss Julia… Fun times!

You can be sure to find ballerinas, princesses with long pretty dresses and tiaras, caped superheroes, and the like, around here any day of the year!

If we only knew…

by Christine - From Dates to Diapers on August 30, 2008

It hasn’t even been two years since we moved in to our house, but our floors have already taken quite the beating. I don’t even want to begin to think of what is lying beneath the carpet. With six kids running in and out all the time, I can only imagine the dirt and dust that has accumulated…. Adding a dog to the mix would be even scarier. Ugggh!

You know, sometimes I wish that we had berber carpet. Berber carpet and laminate flooring are both really great for kids and pets… They truly do hold up against pets, kids, and whatever else has fun on them. My parents have both berber and hard wood – They live in the foothills with two dogs, surrounded by red dirt, but their floors always look so good. Because both are so durable, I would trade my current carpet out in a flash.

I was reading some Empire Carpet Stories – stories from real people about how Empire Today came to the rescue for them when they needed to replace their flooring. For discount carpet, and a plethera of other flooring options, Empire Today has the lowest prices guaranteed and even offer free in-home estimates. They’ll even come to your rescue with next-day installation!

Makeover + Photoshoot = Superstar

by Christine - From Dates to Diapers on August 29, 2008

Walmart’s Money Saving Moms campaign is about to launch and I must say that I am so excited! There are some amazing things that are in the works that I can’t wait to share with you. For now, though, you’ll just have to trust me when I say that you will be excited, too!

Walmart wanted to treat all of us 11 Moms to some pampering, in preparation for the launch on Wednesday, so last Saturday I got my hair done at Vibes Salon. I was overdo for a cut, but Seth was great and worked wonders on my locks, with a new cut and some sassy color.

We also needed some new headshots for Walmart’s new community pages, so I was treated to a photoshoot with my wonderful and talented photographer friend, Sandy. We had so much fun walking around Old Folsom, while I posed and she snapped. She took some amazing pictures and made me look pretty good with her processing skills. You can see some of the 240 pictures she took by clicking on my photo below.

All this pampering is making me feel like quite the star, I must say! Thanks Walmart, Seth, and Sandy!

Back to School

by Christine - From Dates to Diapers on August 28, 2008

We have our books ready, our supplies together, and schedules all made up. We’re just about ready to start school, next Tuesday, here at Keystone Christian Academy. We’re all excited to start a new year!

I would imagine getting ready for school here at our house looks very similar to how your family prepares for back to school. We had to purchase and gather new art supplies, pencils, and paper. The kiddos put together their binders and made sure they had rulers, scissors and glue.

It wasn’t just the kiddos who were getting ready for school to start, though. Their teacher had lots to do too… I had lessons to create, activities to plan, and books to read.

The following items will be fun new additions to our school experience this year. Some of these tools make getting back in to the groove of academia just a bit easier, while others make learning just plain fun!

Felt Math Manipulatives Set Fun Felt has a wide variety of fun activities to keep your kiddos busy. My kiddos have had a ton of fun playing with their Math Manipulatives Felt Board Set and I’ve enjoyed watching them learn some basic math concepts while at play. This school year we will be counting, playing with shapes, learning fractions, numbers, math symbols, and all about money while playing store or working problems. This particular set includes play time lesson ideas, a manual, 273 felt figures, and a 23″ x 31″ felt board background depicting shelves in a toy store. It’s perfect, since my younger ones learn best through play!

Kumon Workbooks: My Book of SIMPLE SENTENCES: Learning about Nouns and Verbs Kumon Publishing is one of the fastest growing children’s publishers in the US, focusing primarily on kindergarten and pre-k educational workbooks.
THE KUMON METHOD is unique and effective as concepts are introduced in a step-by-step manner that allows the child to master each in turn without getting frustrated. Children gain confidence in their abilities, and are motivated to learn on their own, as they trek through fun and colorful pages. There are lots of great workbooks from which to choose at Kumon.

[Tatutina Butterfly Crayon Caddy]We needed a place to store our paint brushes, crayons, and extra desk supplies, and found exactly what we needed in this cute Tatutina Crayon Caddy from Oompa. The caddy is divided into four compartments, one of them large, the other three smaller. We love the bold, saturated paint, done in a butterfly and hearts theme, over bright pink with an orange interior. The yellow string handle is also useful for using the tote on the go.

All of my kiddos seemed to have a difficult time keeping track of their stuff until we started labeling everything…. We label sippy cups, toys, and even clothes. Stuck on You has some pretty fun labels for all of our personal items. They even have personalized school supplies with packs including pencils, sharpeners, scissors, and erasers. No more fighting over who’s is who’s!

Personal Label Maker LetraTag Plus LT-100HFor the dye-hard do-it-yourselfer, Dymo has a Personal Label Maker that is easy to use. We have created labels for all of our storage boxes, binders, and file folders. I find that I reach for my Dymo Label Maker quite often these days as I try to get organized for the coming school year. I’m sure I will use it all year long!

Are there any items that you think I should know about that might make the school year just a bit more fun for us?

Oh, and don’t forget to check out all of the great Back-to-School stuff you can win at the Mommies United Back to School Event!!
